US Senate votes against Isakson bill/amendment

1. Isakson wanted security before legalization

So far, only one amendment was proposed: to stop any guest-worker or legalization plan from going forward until enhanced security measures are put in place.

That measure, by Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is considered one of the so-called poison pills that would stop the bill from moving forward. Lawmakers supporting the Senate bill believe they have the votes to beat back Isakson's amendment.

"Enforcement first may make a tidy bumper sticker, but it is not a strategy for success," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., a key author of the bill on the floor.

So if that vote is any indication, the hang tough GOPers only have 40 votes.

From the sound of the last few votes I caught (Clinton, Kerry, Snowe, Graham: Nay) I was thinking it was something along those lines. I'd just awakened & logged on, and I knew others' attn was on the TSnow conference, so I just wanted to send an update flag on the vote...thanks for filling us in!
