Immigration is Mexico's disgrace: leftist candidate
Immigration is Mexico's disgrace: leftist candidate

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Illegal immigration to the United States is "Mexico's disgrace," caused by the government's failure to create enough jobs, the country's leftist presidential candidate said on Tuesday.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who trails conservative Felipe Calderon in polls ahead of July 2 elections, accused President Vicente Fox's administration of causing the flight of millions of Mexicans to the north, which prompted President Bush to order National Guard troops to the border.

"They are the ones mostly responsible for what is going on because there is no employment, there are no jobs in Mexico so people need to emigrate," Lopez Obrador said on his morning television show."

"The relation we should have between nations and governments is a relation marked by cooperation for development. They need to contribute so that there is development in Mexico," he said.

18. But of course.
And suggesting Mexico fix their own problems is a Herculean task, yet fining all employers who hire illegal immigrants will actually be enforced.

12. You are right!
To emigrate is to leave ones country of origin. To immigrate is to come into a new country.

9. Another populist leader?
Watch this guy rise to power on the backs of the poor. Happens when your neighbor decides to become a fascist society.

19. Lopez Obrador was "front runner" until recently.
Conservative opponents began calling him "the new Chavez." If he should manage to win, I'm sure we'll see The Usual Suspects bitching about him at DU--& his pals, Castro & Chavez.

Mexico has had problems for centuries, but it never decided "to become a fascist society." Anyway, apparently you believe a "Fascist" is better than a "Populist."

24. Um, methinks the fascist society to which s/he was referring is us
I read that post as lauding the rise of a populist and asserting that such a rise was made necessary or at least helped by the fact that Mexico's neighbor has become a fascist state.

10. oh my gawd, that man is actually *blaming Mexico!*
"They (Fox, et al -- NS) are the ones mostly responsible for what is going on because there is no employment, there are no jobs in Mexico so people need to emigrate," Lopez Obrador said on his morning television show."

He's saying that Mexico's problems are mostly Mexico's fault!

Can you do that? Without a bolt of lightning zinging out of heaven to strike you down as the vile racist, yanqui xenophobe that you clearly must be?

Wow.

26. That's the reporter's mistake...
The article never quotes Lopez Obrador saying "immigration"... the first paragraph says "Illegal immigration to the United States is "Mexico's disgrace," caused by the government's failure to create enough jobs, the country's leftist presidential candidate said on Tuesday."

25. I feel for Mexico, it will never change without another bloody revolt.
Mexico is a oil rich nation, where 99.9% are poor and .1% controls the country.

There is no future for Mexico, and Mexicans know it.
