TBILISI (Reuters) - Dozens of protesters have been injured after some 200 demonstrators against a disputed Georgian parliamentary election clashed with supporters of President Eduard Shevardnadze, television pictures showed.

Opposition demonstrators in Bolnisi, 50 km (31 miles) south of the capital Tbilisi, were calling for Shevardnadze to resign on Wednesday when fighting started between them and some 100 presidential supporters, witnesses told independent television channel Mze.

The most seriously injured were taken to hospital in Tbilisi. Pictures showed protesters with head injuries and bruising.

Protests have been rife in the former Soviet state since a November 2 parliamentary election that opponents to Shevardnadze say was illegal and should be re-held.
