U.S. deploys 20,000 troops near Syrian border
http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/breaking_9.html

-snip-

The United States has deployed 20,000 troops along the Syrian border after Syria failed to stop militants from crossing into Iraq.

As late as October, U.S. officials said hundreds of Islamic insurgents were crossing into Iraqi from Syria. They said Syrian authorities had failed to respond to U.S. appeals to stop the flow of insurgents.

U.S. military officials said the U.S. troop presence was bolstered beginning in September and has resulted in a significant drop in infiltration from Syria. The U.S. troops are based in the Iraqi province of Anbar, Middle East Newsline reported.

But the U.S. presence has not halted the flow of insurgents from Syria. On Monday, the U.S. military said six suspected insurgents were captured near the Syrian border. One of them was later killed when he tried to attack a guard.

We're all expecting this, or Iran.

U.S. mounts air campaign in Iraq

-snip-
Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack Jr., commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, said the number of U.S. soldiers in Anbar province, bordering Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, has been tripled in the past two months to 20,000. That, he said, has curbed infiltrations.

“We are not fighting foreign fighters coming across the border in significant numbers,” Swannack said. “We are fighting mostly … locals” loyal to Saddam Hussein’s ousted regime.

5. Likely true, they have Saddam's WMD you know.
and if we invade they won't use them either, they will just move them to Iran, and if we invade there they won't use them either....where will they move them? Maybe New York State if Hillary looks like she will win reelection?

6. Is it also true that Iran
has "moved" their border with Iraq in about fifty miles?

And we were going to "stabilize" the ME? Yeah. Right.

15. oh bullshit
The various brass just came out and said the resistance was local not foreign even if they did attribute it to "Saddam loyalists".

Part of me really wishes they would just go whole hog over there. Try out their "New Order". We would go down in a fashion that made the end of the Soviet Union look anticlimatic.

16. Wasn't there a statement from this guy
Or another commander-on-the-scene along the Syrian border that said that tons of people crossing the border would be news to them, and that Syria was cooperating.

I wish they'd get their story straight...Syria has been cooperating DEEPLY in the War on Terror, and I'm sure it doesn't encourage them to help more if we keep demonizing and accusing them.

17. More like Vietnam everyday
First, it's the "hearts and minds" comment. Next, it's the use of "insurgents." Now, we invade another country in all but name to stop "insurgents" from cross-border attacks.

I'm just waiting for search-and-destroy missions and daily body counts on the news.

18. surely they're not so stupid as to pull the trigger a year or so before
an election. More likely, they'll wait until they are given the diebold mandate in 2004 to pursue anybody but Osama by any means necessary.

19. It would be nice to get Syria's perspective on this. Iraq does have other
borders and Saudi Arabia has produced some of the more accomplished insurgents.

22. Shit - (lol) I predicted this for 2 years
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 12:26 AM by Tinoire
This is a hige disaster but we've walked into it knowingly as we allow our party to be "distracted" by secondary issues such as education, abortion and gay rights.

In our 2 party system, those are nothing more than "distractionary" issues to prevent us all from uniting against the greatest evil and progressing from there.

Lots more coming but in order to put together the pieces, one must venture into the I/P forum to keep an eye on all the news that well, isn't really news they say.

WW IV will start and all the important news will still be constrained by special rules.

21. I have my doubts about their effectiveness
Thats a lot of land to cover, even for 20,000 troops. Just look at the US-Mexican border and see how easy it is to sneak across borders despite widespread border patrols.
