US soldier killed in Afghanistan

One US soldier has been killed and six others wounded in a gun battle
between US-led coalition forces and insurgents in southern Afghanistan.

The fighting broke out during a joint operation between US and Afghan troops
in Uruzgan province, the US military said in a statement.

It said the six wounded soldiers were evacuated to a nearby medical facility.

Meanwhile, the Taleban denied reports that one of its top commanders, Mullah Dadullah,
was seized earlier this week.

5. Hmmm, didn't bush say Afghanistan was the model for what
would be the future of Iraq? Well, damn, he was telling the truth even if he didn't know it.

6. How many more bush?
Little puke. That could have been my daughter. I'm so glad she's out of the military now. She thought they really did some good in Afghanistan, but I'm sure bush and company will make sure that good is wasted. A year out of my daughters life. For what?
RIP Soldier

My respect for Cindy Sheehan increases and increases.

7. Afghanistan is just a public relations exercise
It would be considered bad form to wander into a country, kick out the government, and then wander off again.

To be serious about stabalising the country you need about 1/2 million troups. The coalition have somewhwere between 25,000 and 35,000 there, I think.

The troops there are just in big enough numbers so that the newspapers and broadcasters in the west can give the impression to their audiances that there are a lot of troops in Afghanistan, by taking about thousands, when in fact there are only a tenth of those needed.

8. You're right
My daughter was stationed in Kandahar--her unit was deployed shortly after the Marines scattered the Taliban. The money, the time, the troops were never enough for that country. Everything was diverted to Iraq and Afghanistan is left hanging in the wind. The Taliban are still there, waiting, I'm sure.
