CNNMoney: Why the chicken crossed the ocean -- twice
Why the chicken crossed the ocean -- twice
A new government rule will soon allow American chicken meat to be exported to China to be processed, then shipped back.
By Parija Bhatnagar, CNNMoney.com staff writer
May 19, 2006

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - American chicken could soon be making plenty of round-trip visits to China.

The Department of Agriculture last month certified China as eligible to export processed chicken meat to the United States -- but with one caveat. The chicken has to be American.

In other words, American chicken will travel across the ocean once and return cooked and canned - to be sent on its way to a supermarket shelf near you....

***

Some trade experts said the chicken deal could have been an effort by Washington to offer something to Beijing as U.S. officials keep pressing the Chinese on the value of their currency and other trade issues. The U.S. runs a bigger trade deficit with China than any other country.

Parr Rosson, an agricultural economist with Texas A&M University, said he was hard-pressed to spot the benefits to U.S. consumers and producers....

2. You'll think differently about canned chicken
when its the only thing left in your Disaster Supplies Kit and you're (still) waiting for FEMA, sorry, Homeland Security, to show up.

16. I've been looking for it and can't find it anymore, good for soup&emergenc
Good for emergency supplies, better than tuna since the cans are bigger and will fit under your be better. It is good for instant chicken soup too. Our stores don't carry this anymore, thought it wasn't made, will have to search on.

20. It's the foil package that tuna comes in now. I am not big on it, but
canned tuna goes on sale more often now because of it. The chicken is by the tuna packages in my store.

21. Aha, I will look for it. Thanks.
I used to like those nasty whole canned chickens for almost instant soup (if you eat chicken). Dump the whole thing in a big pot, wash hands well, pick out all the nasty parts, add water and lots of vegetables, some pasta or chopped up potatoes or rice, cook 10 minutes.

8. It's also known as 'outsourcing'.

4. If this is not the time to support local/regional businesses-then I do
not know know then it will be. Just, as one example, think of the waste of energy-shipping reshipping chicks back and forth.

11. Hasn't that now been revised by Dear Leader to "Jobs the United States'
illegal aliens WON'T do?" That revision was in a recent speech, I believe.

13. There is no reason the chicken cannot be processed here
Would this be a spinoff of the immigration debate? To reduce jobs for the hispanic population (who hold many of these factory processing jobs) to force them to go home (even though we decimated their ag economy through dumping of our goods)?

14. This is one of the frigging dumbest scams ever pulled on the American
working class that I've ever heard of. This is just so nasty and corrupt. There is NO reason for this petty mean spirited way of further killing off jobs. Isn't chicken processing an important 'industry' in some areas?

Well there really won't be anything left but the damn military soon.

15. boycott
take this information and send it to all your e-mail friends... you know how forwards get flown faster than a phone call these days. Boycott any processed chicken. Besides... its really not that good and in the event of storms, buy tuna and chef boyardee... this is a small "chicken" market... this is one item that is easy to boycott. we aren't talking about chicken you throw on the b-bcue pit. or giving up eggs for sunday brunch.

22. Are these more of those jobs Americans won't do or is it the outsourcing
by American companies? Do we make anything in this country other than war and fear? Can we outsource Bush and his big business policies too? Please!
