Some Nevada Republicans bring discontent to convention

May 21, 2006

MESQUITE, Nev. (AP) - It isn't easy being a Republican these days - not even in Nevada, where just four years ago the party swept all six statewide offices and in 2004 delivered a key victory to President Bush.

But Republicans arrived Friday in Mesquite for the party's state convention with nearly one-third of their ranks no longer approving of the president's policies, according to a national Washington Post/ABC poll. Political observers say there's little chance the party will hold their grip on state offices after November's election, thanks to term limits and failed candidate recruitment efforts that left officials scrambling to a find strong contender for attorney general and 14 Assembly races without a Republican even listed on the ballot.

Add in party divisiveness on key issues - including taxes and immigration - that are splitting conservative party faithful from moderate leadership, and a handful of ethics scandals at home and in Washington that have voters looking down on all politicians.

Even the convention's kickoff golf tournament was canceled for lack of interest.

Thanks for the link, NV Mojo (can I just call you Mojo?).

I'm working hard for the Dina Titus campaign, personally, and I've seen at least three "professional" organizers who were brought in for Kerry working for different Democrats' campaigns. They came to Vegas and liked it, according to two of them (the other guy said he was getting paid well, which I can respect).

But even among the Titus/Gison people, there was some unity as to whom to vore for next year; not the Republican. And a lot more GOTV efforts on our part, from what I've seen.

I'd like to see more effort put into the "rural" areas ("rural" being anywhere but Vegas and maybe Reno), since I'm originally from a rural area in Texas that votes, consitently, for Democrats, but have no idea how to go about doing it. There was a lot of contention between urban and rural at the convention, contention that I didn't think really had a logical place.

Carville said ten years ago that "Newt Gingrich was the best thing to ever happen to Democrats." He just got the name wrong: Dubya has united led the way for common sense like no one else ever before.

Forgot to add: I was not too impressed with Carter. His stock answers were perfect, but could not deliver anything of substance on any issue that matters to me. Seriously worried, in his case. Tessa Hafen, however, I am strangely attracted to, and if the election for the third district doesn't work out, maybe she'll consider marrying a remarkably poor high school English teacher who's heavily in debt?

8. Why are so many pundits saying Reid may have problems in 2008?
I think their was a thread last week on how Reid's approval is falling and he may be open to a challenger. If the Reps are imploding in Nevada, then I would think Reid would be safe.

9. Is crazy Jim Gibbons behind in the polls?
I know he wants to go from being your congressman to being your governor. Does he have any chance of success?
