Latest Hitler: how lies become news (Iran Law that Jews wear armband lie)
Latest Hitler: how lies become news
May 20, 2006

Canada's National Post ran a false story claiming that Iran was planning to oblige non-Muslims to wear badges to indicate their ethnicity so that they could be distinguished in public. Experts have already dissed the story.

The National Post tries, in a lustrum written by Chris Wattie, to distance itself from the sensationalist item by describing it as a "news story and column" by Amir Taheri - a column, an opinion piece, the work of a malevolent hoaxster perhaps. Except of course that the original news story was by, well, Chris Wattie. Wattie adds, in his own defense: "The Simon Wiesenthal Centre and Iranian expatriates living in Canada had confirmed that the order had been passed, although it still had to be approved by Iran’s "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect." Also cited in its defense is the view of the Simon Weisenthal Centre that, although it had no independent corroboration of the report, they believe it to be true. Further, Stephen Harper, the Tory Prime Minister of Canada, said Iran is "very capable" of enacting laws similar to the Nuremberg Laws under the Nazis.

I find this whole thing absolutely disgusting. The National Post deserves all the shame that can be heaped on it.

Check the link for the rest of the story and pics of the New York Post headlines.

1. It is another propaganda attempt by the Reich-wingers
in the Ho House to force an end-times war in the Middle East. But what won't happen is anyone coming from anywhere to take them anywhere except to their final resting places, taking millions of innocents with them.

They are yet again stirring up hated for Brown people on the other side of the earth, thus making the BFEE once and for all, the second coming of the Nazis.

5. Yes...and no. They believed the story because they WANTED to.
They are a large mainstream newspaper. They are rightwing and do print a lot of rightwing opinion, but they would not have gone with this if they knew it was true. Now they look like the idiots they are.

They wanted to believe it because it was exclusive AND it fit their political mold.

If they were thinking straight they would have questioned the sources and certainly would not have run it.

Now what's the big story? The Iranian bill! The National Post draws attention to the bill with it's BS story, and now the real bill is making the news. Pathetic.

3. I sent an email this morn. to the News Editor
Edited on Sat May-20-06 11:35 PM by Canuckistanian
I was asking for a full, prominent and factual retraction of the story.

Even provided a helpful link that I got from Juan Cole's site.

I told them it was a black eye for the Post.

4. Harper chides Iran for non-existent racist bill it doesn't have
OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper was quick to condemn Iran yesterday for an anti-Semitic law that appears not to exist.

Obvious misinformation from CSIS. Guess that they need an overhaul so that the government can obtain correct information.

6. The middle east is a weird place, lies are told and countries
are invaded on the basis of the lies. There is an eagerness to occupy those countries, and the excuse is based on these shady lying bastards.
