BP's 'hero' status argued
Edited on Sun May-21-06 02:00 AM by pezdespencer
The fundraising arm of Texas City's College of the Mainland has named BP its "Corporate Hero" for the year, but teachers and other employees there say the oil giant — which operates a refinery where 15 workers were killed last year — is hardly worthy of such lofty praise.

COM-Unity, an independent employee union at the small community college, says that BP's lax attitude toward safety and the environment contributed to the fatal March 2005 accident at the Texas City plant. And they note recent revelations that the plant was the nation's top polluter among refineries in 2004, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Now they're asking the school's board of trustees to urge the College of the Mainland Foundation, which raises money for scholarships and programs, to withdraw its honor to BP despite its sizable donations in recent years.
