Information Sharing on the Rove Indictment Story

By Marc Ash,

Sun May 21st, 2006 at 11:58:26 AM EDT :: Fitzgerald Investigation

<snip>We know that we have now three independent sources confirming that attorneys for Karl Rove were handed an indictment either late in the night of May 12 or early in the morning of May 13. We know that each source was in a position to know what they were talking about. We know that the office of Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald will not confirm, will not deny, will not comment on its investigation or on our report. We know that both Rove's attorney Robert Luskin and Rove's spokesman Mark Corallo have categorically denied all key facts we have set forth. We know we have information that directly contradicts Luskin and Corallo's denials. We know that there were two network news crews outside of the building in Washington, DC that houses the offices of Patton Boggs, the law firm that represents Karl Rove. We know that the 4th floor of that building (where the Patton Boggs offices are located) was locked down all day Friday and into Saturday night. We know that we have not received a request for a retraction from anyone. And we know that White House spokesman Tony Snow now refuses to discuss Karl Rove - at all.

Further, we know - and we want our readers to know - that we are dependent on confidential sources. We know that a report based solely on information obtained from confidential sources bears some inherent risks. We know that this is - by far - the biggest story we have ever covered, and that we are learning some things as we go along. Finally, we know that we have the support of those who have always supported us, and that must now earn the support of those who have joined us as of late.

<snip>We believe that we hit a nerve with our report. When I get calls on my cell phone from Karl Rove's attorney and spokesman, I have to wonder what's up. "I" believe - but cannot confirm - that Mark Corallo, Karl Rove's spokesman gave Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post my phone number. I believe Howard Kurtz contacted me with the intention of writing a piece critical of our organization. I know that Anne Marie Squeo of the Wall Street Journal attacked us and independent journalism as a whole in her piece titled, "Rove's Camp Takes Center of Web Storm / Bloggers Underscore How Net's Reporting, Dynamics Provide Grist for the Rumor Mill." We believe that rolling out that much conservative journalistic muscle to rebut this story is telling. And we believe that Rove's camp is making a concerted effort to discredit our story and our organization.

Further - and again this is "What We Believe" - Rove may be turning state's evidence. We suspect that the scope of Fitzgerald's investigation may have broadened - clearly to Cheney - and according to one "off the record source" to individuals and events not directly related to the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame. We believe that the indictment which does exist against Karl Rove is sealed. Finally, we believe that there is currently a great deal of activity in the Plame investigation. <snip>

Libby Prosecutor Focuses on CIA Officer's Status
Filings Say Ex-Cheney Aide Knew That Plame Was Classified, Giving Him Reason to Lie to Grand Jury

The classified status of the identity of former CIA officer Valerie Plame will be a key element in any trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff, according to special counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald has said that at trial he plans to show that Libby knew Plame's employment at the CIA was classified and that he lied to the grand jury when he said he had learned from NBC News's Tim Russert that Plame, the wife of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, worked for the agency.<snip>

We don't need any indictments.....(long)

The frenzy of optimism and analysis resulting from Jason Leopold and TruthOut's report of Rove's pending indictment is going the way of all other last gasps the
progressive's have had over the years, spiraling down the gurgler.

The Neocon's win again. The goal this time was to discredit a rising voice of dissent. TruthOut, Jason Leopold and William Rivers Pitt and the entire blogosphere.
The elaborate lies told by Rove's minions orchestrated by the master himself Karl...once again show who is in charge here. The Rove assassination machine can
reach out and swat anyone at anytime. And now we have seen one of my favorite voices fall prey to the evil that is Karl Rove. So now...we find that the
TruthOut...isn't always. And that is all it takes for anyone outside of our liberal circle. I for one will concede that. I will continue to read and digest information from
all sources including TruthOut, Pitt and Leopold. Unfortunately, for many others, the damage has been done and that is all they need. Outside of our own anxious
progressive community the truth that was will forever be tarnished and sadly most of America has no real clue what just happened in the past 8 days, the vast
majority of America knows more about who was ejected from American Idol than about Jason Leopold, William Rivers Pitt and TruthOut.org.

The established media has too much invested to allow alternative forms of reporting to bypass the editor's desk of major, corporate controlled, news organizations.
Thus the coordinated set up and subsequent smear of TruthOut.org, Jason Leopold and William Rivers Pitt. As they built up (and rebuilt) credibility over the past
year it was seen that the influence was becoming too strong. A coordinated effort to discredit TruthOut would not only result in the the elimination of a valuable
source of analysis and reporting but would also tarnish the entire blogosphere in general as many progressive blogs have quoted and sourced TruthOut, Leopold
and Pitt. Leopold was a ripe pawn in a Rovian style attack. Using his own vulnerability he succesfully used that to take down an unwitting adversary in the war to
control the message.

Rovian Empire

Paul Begala has pointed out that Karl Rove was not going to roll over and let a little investigation slow him down. Quite true, Rove is already starting to coordinate
the most reprehensible GOP campaign strategy ever and we will be appalled at what comes to us this fall. The big money is in Karl's corner. And Karl has all the
weapon's at his disposal and most of them have nothing to do with honor, truth or fairness. He also understands all to well that the vast majority of the American
public gets news and information from a few major outlets and discounts any others as being "fringe". Rove knows where America's ear is and he is constantly
whispering in it. So we see the coordinated effort by not only Karl Rove's machine, but also his contacts whithin the media itself with one goal to discredit Truthout
and Jason Leopold. Rove has a remarkable ability to be patient and to recongize opportunity. It's payback time and for his targets that payback is a ussually a swift
mean bitch.

So understandably if Fitzgerald is focused on Karl Rove he is no doubt aware of the lengths that Rove will take to derail his investigation. With the NeoCon's in
charge of most of Washington and the courts padded with ultra conservative Bush appointee's it seems likely that for Fitzgerald's investigation to conclude with any
indictments beyond Lewis Libby, his case needs to be more than bullet proof. So only Fitzgerald knows and any other source of information about the Plame
investigation is suspect.

GOP Behind by two touchdowns in the 4th Quarter

We are entering into the summer before an election and already we are seeing the signs that this like all the elections since 2000, is going to be yet another
bizarre unreal ordeal for many. The GOP and Bush is on the skids in the polls, they are down but far from out. All the events, policies and activities of everyone in
Washington is now tied to November and the goal is to ensure that the American people are given the appearance of and election. When in reality it is already a
done deal. The GOP may make a remarkable 4th quarter comeback and retain control of both the house and the senate. If they do we will have fight the good fight
only it will have been equivalent to throwing stones at tanks or charging a line of machine guns with cavalry. We throw ourselves into the fight because that is all
we can do.

The dead have no need for Civil Liberties...neither do the living apparently.

So here we are with another crazy NeoCon adventure underway. Bush is poised to appoint a military general to the CIA. The same man who created the process of
systematically illegally spying on American citizens. The extent of which no one will reveal. The GOP leadership has lined up to hand this nation over, bit by bit to
corporatist thieves. Bush will continue to do as his handlers please regardless of constitutional boundaries which appear to indeed be worth the value of the paper
they were written on. The end goal we know is U.S. military domination of global oil reserves and the world succumbing to corporate quarterly goals. The absurdity
and hubris of our current situation was so pointedly illustrated by in the opening statement by the chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee. He opened his
remarks with comments about the leakers of classified information on the NSA domestic spy program rather than the obvious legality of said program. Clearly
presenting a small picture for American Idle enraptured public to digest and support. CIA director Hayden put a exclamation point on the whole show with the
quote. "You don't have civil liberties if you are dead." So logically challenged America can conclude we don't really need them when we are living then. Fucking
brilliant.

America - Time to look to next season.

Following the rapid decline of America is like watching a really bad football team play. As take sides with the underdog you start cheering for first downs. As we
have seen time and time again our team gets chop blocked or eye gouged on third and short with no penalty. In the end you feel the game could of been officiated
more fairly but accept the final score and outcome then flip the channel over to American Idol, hope for better picks in the draft and look to next season.

For Democrats and progressives, it is not that we are cheering our team in the play-offs or conference championship, no we are looking at third and long again and
we on the edge of our seats screaming at the TV, hoping for that first down, taking what we can get and looking to next season for a fresh start. Meanwhile the
GOP, corporate leaders and their hookers sit in the skybox, drinking Dom and eating snails, paying no attention to the game and writing out checks for next weeks
game, the outcome of which has already been determined, all while tipping the illegal aliens serving them.

Hope?

Looking back on those prosperous years in the 90's we have a tendency to ask ourselves "What the fuck happened?". The change from then to now is so
remarkably opposite that it is difficult to grasp. But indeed it is is completely the anti-90's right now.

The issues that we now face go beyond resolution in our lifetime. Let me repete:
The issues that we now face go beyond resolution in our lifetime. That is a big point that we all need to accept and accept in short order. What remains is for those
of us fighting for peace, justice and equality in the world, have to be willing to sacrifice and accept our fate in this generation and look to arming the next with the
values and tools needed to continue that struggle. So hope and optimism comes from knowing that the sometimes futile struggles we engage in are laying a
important foundation that the next generation will build upon. With that recongition comes renewed hope and vigor to continue fighting for that first down.

Many of our parents were came of age in a time of depression and world war, a very dark time in human history indeed. Having been witness to the worst that
humanity could produce "the greatest generation" looked inward and built a standard of living unmatched in human history when peace returned. They believed
that the spectre of world war should not darken the lives our thier children. But indoing so we have become blind to the realities of the world and human nature
and has cost us all in the end. Only now are we waking to see what our comfort has cost us all. The cost as we see now was the loss of vision, self-sacrifice and
the pioneering spirit that made this country what it is. What was left was the selfish expectation of the right to live and take whatever is needed to maintain our
way of life, our culture, that was born and built by the glow of a cathode ray tube flickering in the living room.

So we see now, the powers of greed and selfishness armed with the weapons of fear and secercy have driven aside rational debate and honest democracy. They
are celebrating the victory by stripping the candy shop bare and filling their stomachs and pockets...making us all terminally sick in the process.

What do we do now?

Punt? Forfit? No we rally. We do the opposite of what is expected. We celebrate life and the world we live in. We teach our children that truth, equality and justice
are eternal ideas not simply pretty words. We look at our lives and take ourselves to another place, a state of being, where the greedy, selfish haters cannot go.
Many of us are already there. That place is simple to find. It is found by reaching out and coming together, talking and laughing, loving and crying, together. As we
embrace each other and celebrate our diversity those who look to defeat us will be left out, their hate and greed will overcome them in the end and they will fade
away and a new world will emerge. Our culture is dividing day by day. It is clear what that division is it is one of peace, equality and justice and another of war, fear
and greed. In all human tales of good versus evil, what side ultimately prevails?

Love is our strength.

Our biggest strength is the love we have and feel for each other and this planet we live on. Celebrating and acknowleging this has always been the force that
drives creation and spawns new generations. As simple and idealistic as this sounds it is the truth we all feel. Any system that is designed and based in violence,
hate and greed cannot survive in an environment of love.

Love is not logical. It follows no rules or is required to present corroborating facts from multiple sources. It requires no license or permit, budget, tax-cut, security
detail, fighter cover, landmines, cluster bombs, barbed wire, water boarding or extraordinary rendition. Love does not require federal labeling, legal disclaimers,
warranties or contracts. It does not require 2/3rds majority, constitutional amendments or a special prosecutor. Love does not require a Patriot Act, National
Security Agency, 14 naval battle groups or Kalashnikov rifles and IEDs. Love doesn not require big screen TV's, 4000 lbs. SUVs, 20,000 sq.ft. suburban homes,
shopping malls or mini-marts.

All love requires is your heart and desire to make the world a better place. With that we can and will change the world.

Already I can hear the laughter and cackles from the haters. They are claiming victory or moaning "defeatist!" because what chance does "love" have against a well
placed lie or the concentrated fire-power of a military strike? The latter are too easily chosen by individuals of low moral character. I would rather be struck down
because I chose love over being expolited by fear.

Going into the weekend we don't need indictments any longer. We only need each other and the love we have for this nation and this planet full of people we call
home. With that as our base we can justify our continued efforts and live beautiful, fufilling lives.
