Report: New Orleans Levees Underfunded
Report: New Orleans Levees Underfunded

Monday May 22, 2006 4:46 PM

By CAIN BURDEAU

Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The city's levee system was routinely underfunded and therefore
inadequate to protect against hurricanes, according to an independent report released
Monday.

The report also called for an overhaul of the agencies that oversee flood protection.
It took aim at Congress for its piecemeal funding over the past 50 years, and at state
and local levee authorities for failing to properly oversee maintenance of the levees.

"You tend to get what you pay for," Dave Rogers, a member of the team of academics
who extensively studied the system, said during a Monday news conference.

The study was performed by the Independent Levee Investigation Team, led by the University
of California, Berkeley. The group has been highly critical of the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, which was in charge of designing and building the complicated system.

6. It is LBN: "according to an independent report released Monday"
Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic.
This article is about a new report just released today.

8. To quote Neil Young:
What if al qaeda blew up the levees?

Would New Orleans have been safer that way?

10. With Nagin in they will still be underfunded and Wash. will be no help..
The powers that be will simply not give Nagin the resources needed. Set up to fail. I don;t understand why he wanted to win.

11. If the WH, or the pig farm, was below sea level (not figuratively)
levees would not be underfunded. And that's the bottom line.

12. When has the Bush admin. EVER shown any indication they care about NO?
Even since Katrina, have they even shown remorse? Or attempts to make amends? Nope. Let's quit acting surprised and outraged over continued neglect, is my suggestion.
