WASHINGTON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Turkey will hold a joint military exercise next week using naval, army and air forces aimed at demonstrating a determination to stop missile and nuclear technology from reaching Iran and other countries, the New York Times reported Monday.
The scheduled exercise was part of a three-year effort known as the Proliferation Security Initiative, under which the United States and cooperating countries carry out military and naval exercises to intercept nuclear materials and contraband items.
The initiative also involves efforts to restrict financing and suspect commercial transactions for Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Syria, Cuba and other countries.
About 20 such exercises have taken place in the last three years, beginning with naval exercises involving Japan that caused anger within the DPRK government, which has accused the U.S. of using intimidation tactics.
