LAVAL, Que. — Quebec Premier Jean Charest says he's ready to act alone to respect the Kyoto accord if the federal government reneges on its commitments.
Charest says his government will soon present its own plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and it will fall in line with the province's recently announced energy policy.
That policy favours renewable forms of energy, like hydro and wind power.
Quebec has been a vocal supporter of Kyoto but federal Environment Minister Rona Ambrose has said the government can't meet the targets the Liberals negotiated — a six per cent cut in greenhouse emissions from 1990 levels by 2012.
