NEW YORK, May 25 (Reuters) - A power outage shut down train service between New York and Washington during rush hour on Thursday, affecting some of the most heavily traveled lines in the U.S. rail system, officials said.

Amtrak rail company told customers at Philadelphia's 30th Street station that train service in the New York-Washington division was suspended.

Amtrak officials were unavailable for comment.

"Due to an Amtrak power outage, trains between New York and Washington are suspended," said Dan Triana, a spokesman for New Jersey Transit.

He said the Amtrak outage affected New Jersey Transit's two most heavily traveled lines, which move 70,000 passengers per weekday, and some trains destined for midtown Manhattan have been diverted to Hoboken, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York.

8. Actually they do realize that.
The idiots don't realize that this will encourage more people to drive to work, further draining oil resources !

It's all part of their master plan. "Further draining oil resources" = "further bloating Big Oil's windfall profit$$$, thereby lining the pockets of all those loyal Bush** supporters". :puke:

3. Shades of soviet Russia, 1969.
So now I suppose we need a Mussolini to tell us the trains are really on time, after all.

6. From the Amtrak website:
Service Alert: Northeast Corridor Power Outage

At approximately 8:00 a.m. today, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line experienced a major power outage affecting train propulsion power from Washington through New York Penn Station to a point in Queens, NY. At this time, Amtrak trains and other trains using the Northeast Corridor in the affected area (MARC, SEPTA and New Jersey Transit) are standing at various locations between Washington and New York.

Amtrak’s first priority is to use diesel locomotives to remove several trains from tunnels in New York and Baltimore. Currently there are three New Jersey Transit trains and one Amtrak train in the Hudson River Tunnel and one Amtrak train in the B&P Tunnel in Baltimore.

Meanwhile, Amtrak is working to restore power from the substations along the route to the electric power lines that supply power to trains along the route.

9. This also affected the Septa regional lines in Philly.
I ride the R6 into Suburban Station in Center City every day. Today I had to get off at North Broad and take the subway the rest of the way in.
