9/11 Memorial Foundation Leader Resigns

Under tremendous and conflicting pressures, with the 9/11 memorial planning process seemingly spinning out of control, Gretchen Dykstra resigned today as president and chief executive of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation.
"There is general agreement that the multiplicity of authorities and the unclear roles has made it difficult for anyone to move expeditiously," she wrote in a letter to Thomas S. Johnson, the chairman of the foundation's executive committee.
"Perhaps it would help if there was one less player. Therefore, it is with sadness and regret that I hereby tender my resignation, effective immediately."
Joseph C. Daniels, the general counsel of the foundation, was appointed acting president.
Whether the foundation was losing a principled, capable executive who fearlessly drew public attention to the unsustainable price tag of the memorial or a lightning rod who failed to raise enough money and alienated Gov. George E. Pataki and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg or both depended on whom one asked....
