Pro-gay student writer takes flak in Utah

http://www.gay.com/news/election/article.html?2006/05/26/2

A right-wing organization has asked Utah's attorney general and education chief to investigate a Provo-area school over a student's pro-gay and health-related articles in the school newspaper, the Associated Press reported.

One of the articles ran alongside an opposing article written by the daughter of Stephen Graham, president of the anti-gay Standard of Liberty Foundation.

On Nov. 17, an opinion piece by student Sarah Brimhall advocated formation of a gay-straight alliance at Lone Peak High School in Highland. It appeared alongside an opposing view written by Graham's daughter, Elise.

On May 15, a news article and an opinion piece, both written by Brimhall, addressed a vaccination for human papilloma virus (HPV), which can be spread by sexual contact. In the opinion piece, Brimhall wrote that teaching abstinence is not enough to prevent the spread of HPV.

I'm 64 and should be getting conservative at this age, but I just can't get why this causes so much agitation with these people. Whatever happened to live and let live?

3. The right-wing has had a dream for 25 years now
since Saint Reagan embraced their dream of an all-white, church-going, totally hetero USA with distinct separate roles for men & women. That dream is being punctured by outspoken gay kids. And Phyllis Schafley doesn't like it. "Resmuglicans" are still under the impression that gays are weak and can still be intimidated and pushed around (with Bush's backing of course). All I can say is: remember Stonewall. Maybe Phyllis, Dobson, Robertson, Rod Parsley, Rove, Musgrave, Savage, Coburn, Santorum, Coulter, Hannity, and Bush will be finally silenced like Anita Bryant was in the 70s for her outrageous attacks on gay people.

2. Close your eyes! Plug your ears
and those nasty folks will go away!

"The Standard of Liberty Foundation contended Wednesday that Brimhall's articles violated a Utah law prohibiting schools from any activity that results in students revealing information about their sexual behavior, orientation or attitudes and a law that requires schools stress abstinence and not advocate homosexuality or sexual activity outside marriage."

4. Well, surely Graham's daughter would be guilty of breaking this law, no?
After all, she's almost certainly revealing that she's straight, by demonstrating to the world that she's anti-gay.

5. No No No!
What's wrong with you? That's called NORMAL. She is only straight when she is married and having sex *shudder*.

God, it is just a daily onslaught with these people isn't it?

9. Me either
that is why it is so hard to get through to them. Emotion vs logic or Faith vs logic, I don't know but eventually we will get there.

13. the interesting thing is that this is one of Rush Limbaugh's main claims
that liberals use "emotion" while conservatives use logic.

My experience is exactly the opposite. Certainly on social issues, liberals use fact and logic, while rightwingers use faith based emotion.

by accusing is of doing what they are doing. How anyone buys into that I'll never understand.

10. Silly. It's a restrictive law. Therefore it only applies to gays.
It's whole purpose is to drive gays back into the closet by preventing them from ever mentioning their own feelings. And that can provide excuses for bullying from anyone who realizes that they are gay.

17. I believe that law only applies . . .
to the school district and school activities. This kid's newletter article is a gray area, in that a school official didn't write it. There could be a question as to whether the newsletter is an "official communication" of the district.

7. Because Fear Is A GOOD Thing
at least, to many Conswervatives. Think I exaggerate, consider this quote from Phylis Schlafly

It's very healthy for a young girl to be deterred from promiscuity by fear of contracting a painful, incurable disease, or cervical cancer, or sterility, or the likelihood of giving birth to a dead, blind, or brain-damage baby even ten years later when she may be happily married.

See, the vaccine will just give women an excuse to be sluts. So, it's a bad thing. You know, it's the "AIDS Cures F*gs" line applied to sexually liberated women.

12. "Pro-gay" is nearly as misleading as "pro-abortion"...
...and doesn't describe the thesis of the referenced article.

"Pro-gay" plays into the hands of the hate merchants and their "homosexual agenda." If gay.com wishes to use the term, it should at least be applied with precision.

Promoting medical research to prevent disease is not pro-gay.

19. Can we be a little more paranoid here?
"Sex activists are targeting kids," Graham told Provo's Daily Herald. "They know that high school newspapers can be highly effective carriers of anti-parent, pro-sex propaganda. School administrators are either complicit or clueless."

Uh....ok. LOL

"Sex activists"? and "anti-parent propaganda"?

Pass the friggin Kool Aid!!!
