Humala Gains on Garcia in Peru Presidential Poll, Apoyo Says

May 29 (Bloomberg) -- Peruvian Nationalist candidate Ollanta Humala gained on frontrunner Alan Garcia in an opinion poll ahead of the country's June 4 presidential run-off vote.

Backing for Garcia slipped to 55 percent from 56 percent a week ago, while Humala rose to 45 percent from 43 percent, Lima- based polling firm Apoyo Opinion y Mercado said in an e-mail statement. The May 23-26 nationwide poll of 2,000 registered voters, which is based on valid votes, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

In a mock vote, Garcia, Peru's president from 1985 to 1990, had 52 percent support to Humala's 48 percent, according to Apoyo. Around 20 percent of Peru's voters were still undecided, the pollster said.

1. This is gonna be very close
Regardless of what Chavez says, this is up to the people.

Garcia and Humala are both leftists anyway. Humala is just more leftwing.

"Humala, who proposes making the government a partner in oil and mining contracts, won 30.6 percent of the first round vote on April 9. Garcia, who backs higher taxes on oil and mining profits, had 24.3 percent. The second-round vote will be held June 4."

2. The polls are understating Humala support.
The Indians and poor people are always underrepresented in these Peruvian polls. They will lean towards Humala. Garcia has allowed himself to be painted as the Yankee candidate. He should have emphasized an anti-imperialist agenda.
