WALDO, FL -- Detectives say it's an act of local terrorism. An adult bookstore is cleaning up after a chemical attack by a homemade device that investigators are calling a "weapon of mass destruction."

In Waldo, people have held prayer vigils and protests aimed at an adult bookstore along US 301, trying to keep the "Cafe Risque" from opening its doors on time.

Those efforts have all failed, so investigators say it looks like someone has turned to what they're calling a clear act of terrorism to keep the store's owner from opening up shop.

....

Under state law, by the book, deputies say the device is a weapon of mass destruction.

"They're looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and... 30 years in jail," Faulk said.

"You're trying to hurt people. You're trying to change their ideas or instill fear. And that's exactly what the terrorists do. So this person is a local terrorist," he said.

1. All religious extremists, no matter what "true" religion...
they follow, are fucking terrorists.

3. So the person(s) involved technically used a WMD but only face 30 years...
...while the so-called 20th hijacker faces the possibility of the death penalty (reduced to life without parole)? Why the difference? Terrorism is terrorism.

9. So if someone brought a nuke into the heart of LA...
...the damn thing turned out to be a dud (detonator goes off, destroys a warehouse, but fails to go nuclear and kills/injures no one) you'd be fine and dandy with them being released from prison in 30 years? No one died from the 20th hijacker's involvement because HE DIDN'T FLY ANY OF THE PLANES. Hello?

What part of "Terrorism is terrorism" was confusing to you?

19. Reductio ad absurdum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum

We're not talking about a nuclear bomb for cryin' out loud.
...

The device, discovered Sunday morning, was made of two gallon-size sports drink jugs connected by hoses. Someone set it on top of the store's window air conditioning unit.

...

Prosecute them, yes, but let's try to keep some perspective here.

To DRoseDARs, all "terrorism" is equal.

By DRoseDARs' argument, the same penalty should apply to all terrorists. i.e. some yahoo who pours a caustic liquid into the back room of a "Sex Shop" deserves the same penalty as someone who attempts (unsuccessfully) to set off a nuclear bomb in the heart of LA.

Where the hell do you draw the seriousness line?

JESUS. On a trailer hitch, for good measure.

edit: that's an example of religious terrorism- the very thing that started this whole mess.

22. Not true
There are very few Christians who would claim that Timothy McVeigh (for example) was:
  • Not a terrorist
    or
  • Acting in a Christian manner

There are extremists who would agree with both propositions, but they're rare indeed (not to mention nuts!)

20. Is "attempted murder" the same as "murder?"
I doubt that the perpetrator(s) intended to kill anyone.

Zacarias Moussaoui pled guilty "to taking part in a broad al Qaeda conspiracy that resulted in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, saying Osama bin Laden personally instructed him to fly an airplane into the White House."

That's what his sentence was based on.

The perpetrator(s) in this case may be found guilty of taking part in a conspiracy to destroy private property and scare someone.

Do you see any difference in degree here?

6. Huh?
The rhetoric is completely out of hand -- WMD's are weapons capable of causing 10,000's of deaths. A pipe bomb does not fit.

Tomahawk missle -- no WMD.
Tomahawk missle w/ tatical nuke warhead -- WMD.

8. there are a lot of t. mcveighs waiting in the wings.
whoever did this is merely following the orders they hear every day.

hate on the radio -- radical messages from the pulpit -- what they read.

they're out there just waiting for the right combination of words that they CORRECTLY hear as orders to commit violence.

their leaders of course can wash their hands of said individual -- but the message underlying the act of violence still gets out.

10. But Timmy wasn't a "Real" Xian.
Don't forget, there's a doctrine that states that "so-called" Xians, from Augustinian, through Hitler, to McVeigh, to the creeps that bomb women's clinics aren't "Real" because everybody knows J-Dawg was all about love and non-violence.

Nice safety valve to allow for saying "Oh, not MY problem, they don't belong to MY church, where we preach and teach the One TRUE Word, not false doctrine like they do across the street..."

<snip>
Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission - both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state - especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice. You have never felt so powerful, so driven by a purpose: you are 13 years old. You are playing a real-time strategy video game whose creators are linked to the empire of mega-church pastor Rick Warren, best selling author of The Purpose Driven Life.

<end snip>

<snip>
The international director of Mr. Warren's Purpose Driven Church, Mark Carver, is a former investment banker who serves on the Advisory Board of the corporation created in October 2001 to develop and market this game. The creators plan to market their game using the same network marketing techniques that Mr. Warren used to turn The Purpose Driven Life into a commercial success. For example, they plan to distribute their merchandise through pastoral networks, especially mega-churches.

This game immerses children in present-day New York City -- 500 square blocks, stretching from Wall Street to Chinatown, Greenwich Village, the United Nations headquarters, and Harlem. The game rewards children for how effectively they role play the killing of those who resist becoming a born again Christian. The game also offers players the opportunity to switch sides and fight for the army of the AntiChrist, releasing cloven-hoofed demons who feast on conservative Christians and their panicked proselytes (who taste a lot like Christian).

Is this paramilitary mission simulator for children anything other than prejudice and bigotry using religion as an organizing tool to get people in a violent frame of mind? The dialogue includes people saying, "Praise the Lord," as they blow infidels away.

<end snip>

Oh, yes, and the game is based on the "Left Behind" books by Jenkins and LaHaye. LaHaye is quoted in the rawstory article as approving the game, saying, "We hope teenagers like the game. Our real goal is to have no one left behind." Does he mean their real goal is to convert everyone, or kill off the unreborn?

I'm sorry, but I really loathe these people.

only now it has more subtle subliminal effects -- and it has all that capacity to reach the immature, young mind.

No, they lie. Their real goal is to make a LOT of money, fleecing the sheep.

I'm amazed that the followers never seem to notice that their leaders are obscenely rich -- off their contributions.

27. It would be interesting to know just what substance was used
""That water hose would churn it up, mix it up in the gallon jug, and enter it into the building," said Alachua County Sheriff's Sergeant Keith Faulk. Investigators say one of the jugs had a harmful substance inside that flowed into the store along with the water.

"We haven't identified what was actually in the bottle, in the system that delivered it into the building. We do know that it was caustic, it was corrosive, it had a high pH level," Faulk said.

Investigators say the state Department of Environmental Protection is planning to test the chemicals from the contraption in its labs to figure out exactly what was inside, but those tests haven't been done yet.

Homemade -- but mighty effective -- the device had HAZMAT teams in full gear Sunday morning. By Monday, clean-up teams had stripped the room bare. Everything that was inside is now outside. The contaminated trash filled two dumpsters."
