Decision 2006

DeVos TV ad tab: $5.4M
Watchdog says the GOP gubernatorial candidate shattering records months before campaign season.

Charlie Cain / Detroit News Lansing Bureau

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos has spent an unprecedented $5.4 million buying TV air time for commercials trumpeting his campaign, a campaign watchdog group says.

His huge advertising blitz is just the opening of what promises to be by far the most expensive race for governor in Michigan history.

Rich Robinson, executive director of the nonpartisan Michigan Campaign Finance Network, said DeVos is shattering all records. "I'm pretty sure no gubernatorial candidate committee has ever spent that much for TV during an entire campaign," said Robinson, who put together the ad-spending figures by visiting TV stations across the state.

Robinson said the $5.4 million does not include the production costs of the high-quality ads. He said he didn't attempt to tally the cost of DeVos' radio advertising. "To have spent that much on TV at this point is pretty amazing," Robinson said. "Remember: We're still three months from the traditional start of the campaign season and five months before Election Day."

1. This race worries me
Devos has been spending up a storm the last month or so and the polls are reflecting huge gains for him. Dem Governor Granholm is going to have trouble since she hasn't yet started to campaign. Once she starts she will be constantly playing catch-up.

It would be a huge shame to lose Michigan to the GOP, especially a Amway funded GOP shill such as Devos.

5. why worry?

If we're stupid enough to be fooled by a few flashy bullshit ads, then we deserve what hell he will bring us. I think Granholm should put out one ad and that's what it should say. Granholm has it easy, all she has to say is "This isn't 20 years ago... anyone has the power to go investigate for themselves to see who he is and what he's done, and compare that to what I've done."

Personally I think it's a lose/lose either way, because the corporate world is just downright mean to any state that doesn't open it's legs... you know what I mean? Look at California and that whole Enron debacle... and look who benefitted, and who payed the price.

That's why I'm really surprised Arny over in Collifornya isn't doing better. Why doesn't big business toss Collifornyuns a few handouts. Then Arni can go to the rest of America and say (in Arni-speak) "what I do for Collifornya, I do for rest of Amerika."

... after taking over the country, of course they'll proceed to rape the living daylights out of us (some more).

My guess is they would have done this if the democrats were a real opposition party. But since the dems are a sad joke, there's no need to play their trump cards.

2. You Don't Know Dick
DeVos that is...

www.whatyoudontknowaboutdick.com

From michigandems.com

Michigan voters need to know the truth about Dick DeVos.

As head of Amway, Dick DeVos laid off nearly 1,400 people in Michigan in 1998 and 2000. The 1,400 jobs never came back to Michigan. Amway suffered a net loss in Michigan jobs while DeVos was President.

Dick DeVos invested over $200 million in manufacturing plants which created jobs in China. Dick DeVos cares more about creating jobs in China, for his own profit, than he does about creating jobs and a secure future for Michigan families.

For more information on the DeVos record of cutting jobs in Michigan while creating jobs in China, go to

3. His ads are very good
I caught some while watching a Tigers game on the Detroit area FSN channel (I live in MA).

The ads are very good and I noticed he never mentioned that he is a GOPer.

4. DeVos is a certifiable looney
He is bad, bad news. He's a radical Xtian. He's unapologetically pro-corporate and anti-worker.

After years of incompetence (previous Gov. John Engler), Gov. Granholm has had precious little time to patch things back together. If DeVos gets elected, things are going to get very bad, very quickly in Michigan.

8. He and his wife Besty are way farther right than most loonies.
See http://www.merchantsofdeception.com

The whole clan of them are into school vouchers (for private Christian schools), and pro-Intelligent Design research.
Besty DeVos, his wife, the head of the MIGOP, was at odds with our ultra-conservative pro-business governor John Engler (who I stood in line to have recalled over education and welfare reforms), and she ended up quitting as she was way far right of him.

Dicky DeVos (with beady little doll eyes) has more money than GOD, and already he is neck-and-neck at the polls with Jennifer Granholm. She hasn't spent anything yet. We need some fundraising help from outside the state.

The Devos' are also the 4th largest donor to Republican causes in the US. Millions and Millions.

I don't know how I'm going to live in the US anymore with Chimpy and the neocon criminals in the Whitehouse, then a Wacko Fundy gets elected Governor of Michigan, both the federal and my state's houses dominated by Rethuglicans.

All I can do is hope that as the house of cards is falling, it takes the whole lot of Rethugliscum with them. ESPECIALLY THE WACKO DEVOS'.

6. yeah and all it did was pull him even with Granholm
As a Mishigander fighting this bastard on the frontlines I haven't been too impressed.

and don't think that I don't think Granhom's in trouble, but as a partisan democrat I blame the republican legislature

I wish we were seeing the kind of progressive resurgence happening in PA happen here but we need to make that happen.

9. DeVos is up to no good
He is trying to buy his way into the governor's mansion and making a lot of false claims on the way. In his commercial he tries to portray himself as a "job creator." Hardly the case. DeVos laid off close to 1400 people while president of Alticor and oversaw the investment of 220 million dollars in China to serve the market there at the same time he was laying these people off. Oh yes, i think he is a great choice for Michigan. Granholm will beat him, the constiuents of Michigan will see right through this phony.
