Colombian Authorities Make Kidnap Arrest

BOGOTA, Colombia - Authorities captured a suspected rebel Friday who they say coordinated the kidnapping of eight foreign backpackers two months ago, the attorney general's office said.



Edison Ramos Alcazar, the alleged member of the National Liberation Army, or ELN, was being questioned in Santa Marta, 465 miles north of Bogota.


He was arrested in Santa Marta on Thursday, a day after the rebel group announced it would free two of the foreigners on Monday. It was not clear whether the arrest would affect the planned release.


In September, gunmen from the rebel group seized four Israelis, two Britons, a German and a Spaniard in the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern Colombia. One hostage, a British teenager, escaped soon afterward.
