Ex-Liberian President Leaves Sierra Leone

Tuesday June 20, 2006 11:16 AM

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) - A war crimes court spokesman said ex-Liberian President
Charles Taylor left Sierra Leone on Tuesday, apparently headed to The Hague for a
long-awaited trial on charges of allegedly backing rebels in Sierra Leone.

Court spokesman Peter Andersen said Taylor was flown by U.N. helicopter to the airport
on the outskirts of Sierra Leone's capital and escorted onto a plane that took off
shortly afterward. Andersen declined to specify where the plane was headed.

Netherlands confirms Taylor en route to The Hague

20/06/2006 13h23

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Former Liberian president Charles Taylor is on his way to The Hague where he is to face war crimes charges before the Special Court of Sierra Leone using court facilities here.

"He is en route for The Hague. I cannot give any more operational information because of security concerns," Dutch foreign ministry spokesman Gijs Gerlag told AFP Tuesday.

Gerlag added that Taylor was being flown in on a United Nations flight but would not say when the warlord-turned-president would arrive. The ANP news agency reported that Taylor's plane was to touch down at Rotterdam airport.

After his arrival, he will be held in the special detention unit of the International Criminal Court, in the same prison in The Hague suburb of Scheveningen where suspects of the UN war crimes court for the former Yugoslavia are held.
