Six Soldiers Die in Iraq Today
http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0311/23/sun.01.html

Aired November 23, 2003 - 10:02 ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: Now, to our top story. Six more soldiers are added to the U.S. death toll in Iraq, three in hostile action. Meanwhile, a bomb is suspected in an explosion that injured four workers at a northern oil compound. Details on today's bloodshed now from CNN's Walter Rodgers in Baghdad.
WALTER RODGERS, CNN SR. INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Martin. Continuing violence and a continuing surge of violence is the story here in Iraq. Three more American soldiers killed in hostile action today. One of them was killed by a roadside bomb just north of Baghdad in the town of Baqubah. What happens is he's riding down the road in a Humvee vehicle and a remotely detonated roadside bomb goes off. He is killed.

In Mosul, two more American soldiers killed there. The Army will only say about that incident is that there was an auto accident of some sort. There was shooting.

There have been unconfirmed reports of a grizzly execution. We cannot confirm that at this point. And the Army will not confirm it at this point. Either way, however, two American soldiers were seen lying in the road in Mosul under a sheet.

Still, a top American general here said just a few moments ago the American side, the U.S.-led coalition, will prevail. And that indeed the insurgents will be defeated.

1. I posted this in another thread...the "grisly" reference is to
the fact that a couple of American soldiers' bodies were found with their throats slit.

It has something to do with a convoy ambush and shooting.

"We are winning, we will prevail, " cried the Unnamed General.

"Oh my God" cried the Gold Star Mother, when she found out her son's throat was slit.

2. Man
I feel sorry for those kids dying to ensure that Halliburton dominates the global energy industry. I'm sure THEY know what happened to those two kids under the sheet. It won't take many more executions (if they go reported) to have an effect on the perception here. Kucinich for President (http://www.kucinich.us)?

4. And the qualifying US spin starting to appear on every story about
US casualties...

"Still, a top American general here said just a few moments ago the American side, the U.S.-led coalition, will prevail. And that indeed the insurgents will be defeated. "

5. no mention I suppose that the "insurgents" may BELONG there?

In my opinion what the US has done in Iraq is no different than what Hitler did in invading France and Poland

- and gawwd knows that GeeDubya is not finished with his "invading" unless someone, or some country stops him -

but we all know no-one can defeat the USA militarily

- and that seems to be the only language the USA knows these days

- the only immediate hope is that the American voters wake up

- and sorry to say

- doesn't look too promising

(sigh)

7. Are these six Americans more important than the 38 Iraqis killed
yesterday. It would seem so.

6. That only makes three...
what about the other three who, apparently, did not die from hostile action?

On an aside, I remember Martin Savidge when he was a reporter on WJW TV-8 here in Cleveland. He scored the great coup of his journalistic career when he took Terry Anderson a McDonald's milk shake and fries after his release from captivity in Lebanon.

12. They didn't die today, but rather yesterday and Friday
However, CENTCOM announced them today, which is all the report says. Misleading headline, see my post below.

11. Six soldiers DID NOT die in Iraq today - misleading headline
The report notes that 6 more soldiers were added to the toll today. This refers to the notices CENTCOM reported today. It includes:

2 - killed today (11/23) in Mosul by either knife or (as CENTCOM reports) gunshot

1 - killed today (11/23) in Baquba by IED

2 - killed in a traffic accident in Baghdad yesterday (11/22).

1 - killed when vehicle "slid" into a canal while in pursuit of insurgents, Friday (11/21).

That's the six CENTCOM announcements for today, and that is the six that the reporter is referring to.

I want to clear up any confusion so that people don't count the dead from Friday and Saturday twice.

13. Not LBN... locking.
Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 03:03 PM by VolcanoJen
Although CNN (and other mainstream news media sources) reported earlier this morning that six soldiers had been killed today (Sunday, November 23) in Iraq, they (and most other mainstream news media sources) have since backed away from that number/headline. It appears now that they were referring to the combined military deaths from Friday, November 21 through today (which was illuminated by markses, above).

Please feel free to being a new discussion about the media's interpretation and reporting of this story in the General Discussion Forum.

The discussion of today's military deaths can be found in the LBN topics below:

Two U.S. soldiers killed in Mosul (attackers slit victims’ throats) - Original LBN Thread

Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq - First LBN Thread to Report the Death of a Third Soldier, north of Baghdad, and the Civilian Contractors who were wounded in Kirkuk

Thanks!
