Nov. 23 -- Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze announced his resignation live on television Sunday, and thousands erupted in celebration in Tbilisi.

TBILISI, Georgia, Nov. 23 — Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze resigned Sunday, the opposition said, after protesters threatened to seize his residence and his support began to crack, with soldiers joining tens of thousands of opposition backers in the streets of the capital. “I am going home,” he said on television. When asked who was next president of Georgia he said, “It is not my business.”
