NYT/Reuters: Schwarzenegger Reconnecting with Moderates: Poll
Schwarzenegger Reconnecting with Moderates: Poll
By REUTERS
Published: July 6, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Helped by an improved standing with centrists, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has opened a seven-point lead over his Democratic challenger in the November race, according to a poll released on Thursday.

The celebrity Republican governor led state Treasurer Phil Angelides 44 percent to 37 percent, up from a lead of 40 percent to 37 percent in March, according to the Survey and Policy Research Institute of San Jose State University.

His job approval rating was 49 percent among voters and 43 percent among all adults, the best since that rating dipped below 50 percent in March 2005.

Democrats, liberals and Latinos were critical of Schwarzenegger, but men, whites, conservatives, Republicans and voters in the state's Central Valley were rallying around him.

"The governor has improved his standing among the moderates and independents who provide the swing voters in California elections,'' said Melinda Jackson, a political scientist at San Jose State University....

He just paid a 200K fundrasing fine, remember?

If his ratings are going up, it's because he hasn't done anything really stupid LATELY. If Angelides can't beat this guy, he's a lost cause.

4. What the HELL: "Policy Research Institute of San Jose State University"?
Sounds like a push poll was taken. Suddenly, just as the election rolls around, Arnie is suddenly "popular" again? :wtf:? I DO NOT believe this shit. He was stuck at 35% last month and suddenly he is nearing 50% again? I think not.

9. Landscape? As in demographics?
If I can find a color-coded map or something, I'll post it. But it is typical of the US as a whole: Urban areas trend Dem, rural areas trend Repub. In this state, the coast, with the exception of Orange County (San Diego) is very blue. Back in the recall, the higest percentages who wanted Davis out came from the farming communities, the mountains, and the deserts.
