Bush says Lay was 'a good guy'

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Thursday he hopes Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay's "heart was right with the Lord" when he died before he could be sentenced on fraud and conspiracy charges.

Bush called Lay, who was a friend of the Bush family and a large donor to the president's campaign, "a good guy." He said he was shocked to hear both about the Enron scandal and Lay's death this week from a heart attack at age 64.

"I was really surprised," Bush said on CNN's "Larry King Live." "You know, my hope is that his heart was right with the Lord and
I feel real sorry for his wife. She's had a rough go and she's now here on earth to bear the burdens of losing her husband, a man she loved."

The president said he planned to write Linda Lay a letter expressing his condolences.

1. Which Lord are we talking about?
Jesus sure as hell wouldn't condone Lay's actions! The Bible speaks for itself about, amongst other things, stealing.

Bush is just yankin' our chains.

And maybe the Lord saw unto Lay and took his heart away? In which case Bush would have a point.

68. he's not dead
"ken lay's" body is to be cremated.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/07/news/newsmakers/enron_lay.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes

all the money he was to repay stockholders and the fed now goes directly to his wife. now there is no 134 year sentence, hence, no threat of exposing the bigger criminals. Mariana or Cayman Islands would be my guess. if ken lay is dead, george bush was elected president.

4. Oh sure, Mrs. Lay has "had a rough go."
What a fucking joke. Her husband stole lots of money, she lived the life of a queen because of it. It only came crashing down when the thievery was exposed - and we're supposed to feel SORRY for her? Puh-leeze. People who have to make the choice between food or medicine, now THEY are having "a rough go." Having to adjust to a life where you're not pulling in $100mil a year illegally, no, that will never be "a rough go."

Reading the reactions to Lay's death on the internet its clear that Lay was loved and adored in the same way as Fred Phelps, by just about everyone, rich, poor, republican, democrat. Its a bipartisan hate fest where Phelps and Lay are concerned. Praise the Lord. Except I have seen some misguided and factually incorrect support for Lay from the right....ugh.

71. How outrageous! A person can steal all those person's
retirement savings and leave them high and dry and they're a good guy, but if a person steals a loaf of bread to feed their family they're a criminal and go to jail. The elite can commit crimes and get away with it, how shameful!

73. Why couldn't Bushie just make a more neutral statement?
Something like "at this time, I would like to express my sympathy to his family"?

Yeah, I know. Bush is incapable of making sense.

80. Well, he was a good guy for dying so conveniently
And not forcing Bush to make a decision about whether or not to pardon him. Truly, he was a goodfella.

reminded of his comments about Trent Lott's house, after Katrina?

The man's priorities are his own.

89. Bush relates to Ken and Linda's lifestyle more than most people
Just before Enron's collapse they took a $200,000 cruise and at his trial he defended this by saying, "We had realized the American dream, and we were living a very expensive lifestyle....the type of lifestyle where it is difficult to turn off the spigot". I imagine Bush also feels entitled to a similar "lifestyle".

90. For someone who didn't really know them
He shows a superior sense of compassion.
What a knucklehead! I'm sure Kenny boys wifey will be fine in her lap of luxury. She can probably replace the goofy bastard with someone better as well. These are have mores and dubby's base. I'm sure dubby or Jeb will get a truckload of cash for their part in ripping off California and Enron employees and the American people.
Maybe that is what he meant by good guy- code word for send some money my way>
