Ex-governor aims to block Ga. voter ID law
Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes asked a judge Thursday to issue a temporary restraining order to block enforcement of the state's new voter ID law, saying it would keep poor, elderly and minority voters from the polls.

Barnes said the law, which mandates that voters present a government-issued photo identification, violated Georgia's constitution, which guarantees the right to vote.

In an impassioned plea, Barnes said that every year since the nation's founding, "we have seen a march toward greater suffrage, universal suffrage."

But lawyers defending the law argued that to halt it at the "11th hour" would be disruptive. Free voter IDs are already being issued in Georgia and will be required of all those who vote in person in a July 18 state primary.

1. EX-GOVERNOR!!!! EX-GOVERNOR!!! NO! it's FORMER GOVERNOR!
Someone needs to write to SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer and DEMAND she correct that headline!

HELL, Let's ALL write the AP and demand a correction!

Referring to our FORMER Governor (a Democrat by the way) as an EX-Governor is EXTREMELY disrespectful. :nuke: :grr:

I think the only time you refer to a Governor as an EX-Governor is if he or she removed from office, not voted out or, as in the case of this Former Governor, had his office stolen from him by the Diebold Corporation.

Here's info and the e-mail address to request a correction: info@ap.org

1. How do I send a correction or letter to the editor?
Send an email to info@ap.org and it will be forwarded to the reporter or editor.

2. He also beat Sonny Perdue in 02 by a landslide without Diebold.
He had as much as an 11%-point lead in some pre-election polls, won every pre-election poll, yet lost by 5% points. He was an extremely popular governor and I would bet all the money I have or hope to earn on the fact that he won that election.

Strange?

02 was the year Diebold became the one and only vote counter in the state, no paper, no audits, no recounts, as many as 8 "patches" applied after certification, programs probably devised by Jeffrey Dean, just out of the slammer, consulting for Diebold in the first year they used GES, which became GEMS after being acquired by Diebold in Jan of 02, no verification, nobody raising a peep about it, no reporter, no nat'l newscaster.

And we wonder why we're where we are today?
