There have been more than 100 murders of journalists in Colombia since 1980 – and the press freedom situation there is getting worse, according to a new report.
The Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa (FLIP) issued the new report on June 29. From January to June 2006, the organization recorded 72 events it categorized as press freedom violations, compared to 48 for the same period in 2005.
The most frequent type of violation this year has been threats against journalists, with 46 cases. Attempts to obstruct reporting were a distant second, at 11 cases. FLIP also counted nine examples of inhuman or degrading treatment, four cases of journalists forced into exile, one abduction, and one assassination.
The cities with the most violations were Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Ibagué and Barrancabermeja. The topics that provoked the most threats were elections and coverage of paramilitary groups.
