Bush: I'd rather be right than popular

Bush: I'd rather be right than popular

"When history looks back, I'd rather be judged as solving problems and being correct, rather than being popular," Bush said.

"The president that chases the opinion poll is the president that will have failed policy," Bush said in an exclusive joint interview along with his wife, Laura, at the White House.

Some members of Congress are nervous about the effect Bush's political problems might have on their own fortunes in this fall's midterm elections.

But Bush predicted that Republicans would keep their majorities in the House and Senate, "Because we're right on winning this war on terror, and we've got a good economic record," he said. "People are working under the leadership of the Bush administration and the Congress."

24. Report: PR spending doubled under Bush
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-01-26-williams-usat_x.htm

The administration spent at least $88 million in fiscal 2004 on contracts with major public relations firms, the analysis found, compared with $37 million in 2001, Bush's first year in office. In all, the administration spent $250 million on public relations contracts during its first term, compared with $128 million spent for President Clinton between 1997 and 2000. The analysis did not examine what the Clinton administration spent during its first term.

Popular, from the Wicked musical: (Rove is Galinda, Chimpy is Elphaba)

GALINDA
(spoken) Elphie - now that we're friends, I've decided to make you my new project.

ELPHABA
(spoken) You really don't have to do that

GALINDA
(spoken) I know. That's what makes me so nice!
(sung) Whenever I see someone
Less fortunate than I
(And let's face it - who isn't
Less fortunate than I?)
My tender heart
Tends to start to bleed
And when someone needs a makeover
I simply have to take over
I know I know exactly what they need
And even in your case
Tho' it's the toughest case I've yet to face
Don't worry - I'm determined to succeed
Follow my lead
And yes, indeed
You will be:

Popular!
You're gonna be popular!
I'll teach you the proper ploys
When you talk to boys
Little ways to flirt and flounce
I'll show you what shoes to wear
How to fix your hair
Everything that really counts

To be popular
I'll help you be popular!
You'll hang with the right cohorts
You'll be good at sports
Know the slang you've got to know
So let's start
'Cause you've got an awfully long way to go:

Don't be offended by my frank analysis
Think of it as personality dialysis
Now that I've chosen to be come a pal, a
Sister and adviser
There's nobody wiser
Not when it comes to popular -
I know about popular
And with an assist from me
To be who you'll bee
Instead of dreary who-you-were: are:
There's nothing that can stop you
From becoming popu-
Ler: lar:

La la la la
We're gonna make
You popular

When I see depressing creatures
With unprepossessing features
I remind them on their own behalf
To think of
Celebrated heads of state or
Specially great communicators
Did they have brains or knowledge?
Don't make me laugh!

They were popular! Please -
It's all about popular!
It's not about aptitude
It's the way you're viewed
So it's very shrewd to be
Very very popular
Like me!

(spoken) Why, Miss Elphaba, look at you. You're beautiful.

ELPHABA(spoken) I - I have to go:

GALINDA
(spoken) You're welcome!
(sung) And though you protest
Your disinterest
I know clandestinely
You're gonna grin and bear it
Your new found popularity
La la la la
You'll be popular -
Just not as quite as popular
As me!

36. Let's just say, he's as popular as he is right...
...and leave it at that.

I suppose there's some distinction in living through the Administration of the worst President in U.S. History (assuming we do, Cosmic Muffin willing), but it doesn't compensate for the twenty years of misery it will cost us to clean up this abominable mess and restore some semblance of democracy to our battered rape-victim of a nation.

Sometimes it's very difficult to leave karma to karma. I get overwhelmed with a raging need to be there when *'s face is pushed in the vast pile of rotting slime he's created. I want to see justice done on this evil, careless fool who thinks he can play a parlor game with real people's lives in order to pile up money and power points so his team can 'win.' Life being what it is, I try to accept the reality that I never will see that, I never will see those simian features sag in horror as he finally realizes what he's done and how justifiable the rage and hatred of millions really is. I never will hear him say "Oh, god, I really did **** up and millions suffered and thousands died and I'm a worthless crack ho for the oligarchic elite who damn' near trashed 250 years of humanity's noblest experiment in self-determination and I. AM. SO. SORRY!!"

I'll never see or hear that, nope, 'cause it'll never happen. The best we can hope for is that he dies thinking "Those fools never appreciated me, they never knew how good they had it, SOMEDAY they'll be sorry..." That's more likely, but again, I'll never see or hear it because once that semi-evolved pond scum no longer has any active, marginally-legitimated role in the U.S. government I plan to FORGET. HIS. NAME.

It's the best I can do toward achieving what I want for him: Ignored, shunned, relegated to an ignominious oblivion, an ugly asterisk pointing to a grim but small footnote in history. He just isn't that important. He'd never have been important at all had he not been the right enthusiastically willing tool at the right time. I can't wait until Jan. 20, 2007, when I can say ::Makes Sicilian gesture, with apologies to real Sicilians:: He's DEAD to me!

cathartically,
Bright
