Iraqis ambush, mutilate soldiers
Iraqis ambush, mutilate soldiers

By Christine Spolar
Chicago Tribune

BAGHDAD -- Two American soldiers were shot and mutilated Sunday by assailants who attacked their vehicle in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in another day of insurgent violence against coalition forces, according to U.S. military sources.

The men were traveling in a white four-wheel-drive car when a brick or stone was thrown at the vehicle, causing it to stop, military sources said. A crowd of armed assailants quickly overwhelmed the car.

Soldiers from a nearby compound tried to rescue the men, military officials said, but before they could get there, a mob killed the two soldiers, leaving their bodies lying in the street.

There were conflicting reports whether the men were shot or slashed to death. Military spokesmen in Baghdad refused to discuss the attack in detail. (snip/...)

3. If a person thinks that a story that importent
would not get posted until 710am the day after it broke, then yes, s/he desrves to have people be a bit rude

5. google news lists the story as being three hours old.
I only heard it on CBS radio news a short time ago, and went to google to find the story. It was the first time I had heard it.

I don't believe I'm stupid, and I don't believe I'm lazy.

6. I never ment to imply that you were any of those things
Just that posting a story late after a large number of people have seen numerous dupes throughout the last 24 hours opens one up for slightly snide comments. Nothing more, nothing less :)

4. You know what? I've seen tons of stories people have posted
after others have also posted them.

I have NEVER considered trying to embarrass them.

You have the choice of clicking "alert" and giving the moderator the link to the story which was posted prior to the duplicate.

That's what many posters do, when the situation arises.

Or are you more interested in trying to publically humiliate someone?

15. Who appointed you hall monitor?? If you've got a problem...
...with a particular post, email one of the moderators instead of trying to deliberately embarrass someone.

Not everyone hangs on the news all weekend...that may have been the first time that poster saw that particular article.

18. I think it's funny...
when people get all snitty over dupes. Many people haven't seen this story. I was on a lot yesterday, but hang out in LBN and didn't see this story all the times I was on, though I'd heard about it. I was glad to see it today so I could get more info. Dupes don't bother me. Rudeness or people jumping on someone for posting a dupe does, and people here jump on others ALL THE TIME for posting a dupe. See, most people have no idea a post they're reading is a dupe, so they read it and then they want to read the replies. Then there's this equivalent of the high school hall monitor telling the poster it's a dupe in short, brisk language, which does in fact read as 'rude' to many people who don't speak this way to others. It totally throws a wrench into the thread. Maybe DU should have an official dupe police force in order to severely punish offenders so they dare not post a dupe ever again?

7. There is something interesting in this "new" report
I was shocked this morning to hear on CNN that the military is now saying that the soldier's bodies were only looted. No throats slit, nor bodies beaten with cinderblocks. To which the female anchor during their early morning show replied "Oh, that's not so bad".

Then I see in this article that there are internal memos stating the contrary. This administration knows that this is the type of incident that can quickly turn the sheeple against them and against this war. So we get more lies, deception and distractions.

8. I wish i had caught that this morning
"To which the female anchor during their early morning show replied "Oh, that's not so bad". "

Cnn's early morning anchor ( i don't remember her name, she has long brown hair) seems to be there only for her somewhat photogenic quality. She's about as ditzy an anchor as i have ever seen.

to find out what happened in the world while I was sleeping.

Then I blissfully tune back out by watching the "Book of Pooh" on the Disney Channel while getting my daughter dressed for school.

17. Thank you for posting this, JudiLyn
Now, before this thread gets hijacked about cnn anchors, did anyone yet notice the disparities between the stories that have been reported and this one from the Trib?

This story is far different and less alarming than the others that were originally posted.

I smell BS.

19. I noticed this too...
The first I'd heard, the soldiers had their throats slashed. Then I'd heard they were shot, then dragged out of the car and mutilated. Then I'd heard they were shot and hit with bricks by Iraqi youth. I don't know if I want to hear the real story if these other stories are attempts to tone what really happened down a bit. Either way, this is an awful story, and I can't imagine how the parents of these men would feel about their bodies being dragged out in the streets to make a point.

I will try and find it again and post it. It said the vehicle crashed, then the soldiers throats were slit.

22. Yes, this is a huge story
and it is important to watch how it "mutates" as it is reported by various sources. We were talking about this yesterday in another thread.

I don't get all twisted about dupes. With a big incident, there are lots of stories that deserve a report here. Different versions shed light on what really happened and how it's being spun by different outlets. If there ever was one, this is a multi-day story, and I certainly don't mind seeing a fresh thread on it with new information.

23. Holy Crap. We Are Obviously "Losing" Over There
AWOL's plan is to get out before the election and declare victory.. I think they're gonna nuke the place and claim it was an al quaeda attack or something.

What a failure our "president" is. He starts a fight that he can't finish.. just like his daddy.

He's a lame duck and he knows it.

25. Here is the version that most closely resembles the Original...
<Witness account

A formal statement said the two men from the 101st Airborne Division which patrols Mosul were killed just past noon (0900 GMT) in the western part of the city centre.

Witnesses said they saw gunmen open fire with Kalashnikov assault rifles on a three-vehicle convoy, causing one to crash.

They said the other two vehicles had continued on their way, allowing the assailants to approach the stricken soldiers and remove their helmets and flak jackets. The attackers then slit the soldiers' throats, they said.>
