Sen. Bayh seeks edge in Democratic field
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060708/ap_on_el_se/bayh_s_beginning

JOHNSTON, Iowa - In a quiet, methodical style reflecting his Midwestern roots, Sen. Evan Bayh (news, bio, voting record) is laying the foundation for a presidential campaign and prompting some Democrats to talk about a candidate with a realistic shot.

"The chatter that you hear is that he's a good guy and nice and he has that honest, Midwestern feel to him, kind of like Harry Truman," said veteran Democratic strategist Dane Strother. "That's all appealing."

In his fifth trip to Iowa in the last year, the centrist Indiana Democrat opened a three-day swing Thursday with a fundraiser in downtown Des Moines for legislative candidates. He mingled easily with about 50 party activists for more than an hour and made a point of chatting with everyone in the room.

"He's a Midwesterner and that will help him in Iowa," said state Senate Democratic leader Michael Gronstal. "It's up to him to sell himself, and so far he's been fairly impressive."

1. "Realistic shot????"
The arrogance and ignorance of conservatives will never cease to amaze me.

Or maybe they like their tax cuts so much that they don't mind keeping the party out of power.

23. I guess he saw how NCPAC destroyed his dad.
Birch Bayh was an outspoken liberal Senator, NCPAC tore him to pieces and destroyed him in 1980, along with Mc Govern, Culver and Church.

I guess Evan saw how his dad was destroyed and that's why he's a conservative.

24. FDR, Truman, JFK...
...were hawks and would find themselves at odds with the anti-war movement, and JFK cut taxes the moment he got into office. And what about 'Scoop' Jackson? Remember him?

Liberals, but not left-wingers.

16. WARNER WARNER WARNER
If you guys want a PROGRESSIVE who CAN win many southern states etc. than look at him. I know he is a DLC-er, but he was my governor and frankly, as a progressive, rarely if ever found myself in disagreement with him. Just remember guys....we shouldn't be gauging candidates on whether or not they are DLC-ers or not, but rather whether or not they are progressive on the issues and can win.

Don't believe me? Do a DU poll asking if DUers like DLCers.

I thought you were implying that anyone who likes Warner, as I do, "loves" the DLC. Does everyone on DU who likes Kerry, Clinton or Gore, "love" the DLC?

edited to add "on DU"

Why don't you do a DU poll and ask if DUers like DLCers.

P.S. It's been years since Gore was a DLCer.

36. I am a liberal who happens to like Bayh.
I've met the man. I've heard him talk to a Democratic audience.

Evan Bayh is a good person. Of the so-called professed presidential candidates for 2008, he is one of two or three who I can support.

Did any of the people hear screeching "DLC!", "Conservative", etc. consider that Bayh is a Senator from a very conservative state and that he might have to take certain positions in order to keep his seat? I am not afraid of Bayh as president because I know him to be an intelligent, honest person who will respond to the country's needs in an intelligent, honest way.

Would I rather have other candidates as nominee? Yes. But I have absolutely no problems with Evan Bayh. He's a very good guy.
