Lieberman challenger escapes injury in festival accident
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 09:53 PM by brooklynite
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Ned Lamont, the Democratic challenger for U.S. Senate and several of his campaign staff workers were in the same crowd that a station wagon plowed into Saturday afternoon during the city's annual Sailfest.

Lamont was not injured, said a campaign spokeswoman, but three of the staffers were treated for various injuries. In all 27, people were injured in the incident.

Lamont, who is challenging three-term incumbent Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Aug. 8 primary, was campaigning at festival, said spokeswoman Liz Dupont-Diehl.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was hurt," Dupont-Diehl told The Associated Press.

The campaign workers injuries' included a broken leg, a fractured nose and scrapes and bruises. Their names have not been released.

3. I am only 62, but I stopped driving when my neuropathy got to the point
where I felt I couldn't control my car anymore. That was 6 1/2 years ago, and I HATE IT to this day! But I would never get behind the wheel of a car, because I don't have enough feeling in my feet to feel the pressure on the pedals. Starting too fast or stopping too quick does not make for a good driver!!!!!

I don't mean to generalize, but at 89, I smell an age problem here!

I'm sorry this happened, and Im sure the driver is too!

I hope he stops driving now!

15. I keep thinking about the deaths at the 3rd Street Promenade...
...a mile from my (then) home in Santa Monica.

THANK YOU for giving up driving. I know it was hard, but it really was smart, and I know it's appreciated.

17. You read my mind re Santa Monica.
I've got an 88-year-old uncle who was a horrible driver 40 years before macular degeneration set in, and the damned fool still won't stop driving. Never mind all the tickets... Never mind the fact that he travels 40 miles out of his way to go to the DMV that isn't so picky about whether he passes his eye test or not...

One of these days, the old bastard is going to kill someone.

THANK YOU to all the ex-drivers who recognize their limitations, and act responsibly!

As James Dean said in a safe-driving PSA not long before his death: "The life you save may be mine."

4. from Lamont's website
A few bumps and bruises, a broken leg, fractured nose, and some pretty shaken-up staffers and volunteers… BUT EVERYONE WITH THE CAMPAIGN IS OK. I am not sure about everyone else injured, but they are all in our thoughts and prayers.

For everyone wondering what I am talking about (I wanted to get the don’t panic part in first for those that did), a car plowed into a group of 27 people at a New London event today. Quite a few campaign staffers were in the path. Ned is not among those injured. The article suggests (although I don’t want to read too much into it) that everyone will be alright.

Update
Can you be more proud of a campaign staffer? One of our Congressional District Coordinators and ex-service member, Rafe (2nd CD), actually pushed someone out of the way of the oncoming car and took the punishment himself. He is laid up in the hospital this evening with what appear to be two broken legs. He’ll be alright though, and if I know anything about him (which I do), he’ll be crutching along ID’ing voters and door-knocking in no time.

5. No serious bodily injury or worse better happen to Lamont that takes him
...out of the running. The lone nut case in this case is a few nuts short of even a a half bag full it appears.

28. I've got to admit...
...when I first read the headline my first thought was "SETUP JOB!"
:tinfoilhat:
I think we've been lied to a time or two too often, ya know?
But I can tell when they're lying...cos their lips are moving.

29. Saw this in today's Globe
and the first thing that struck me (no pun intended of course) was the fact that the headline didn't use Lamont's name it was like they're using the accident as an opportunity to plug Lieberman.
