AFP: Hong Kong to switch off lights in pollution protest
Hong Kong to switch off in pollution protest
Jul 09

Environmentalists hope to turn out the lights of Hong Kong's dazzling skyline in a protest aimed at telling the world about the city's rapidly worsening air pollution, organisers said.

Organisers of Lights Out Hong Kong are urging residents and businesses to switch off the lights in their homes and offices for three minutes at 8pm on August 8.

"This is to tell the government that the community wants a strong stance on eliminating pollution," organiser Alastair Robins said....

Daily inundations of choking smog -- produced in large part by the factories, vehicles and power stations of neighbouring southern China's heavily industrialised Pearl River Delta region -- have gravely reduced the number of days on which one side of the famous harbour is visible from the other.

Recent surveys suggest the smog has also begun to harm the city's economy: tour operators say one in 10 tourists falls ill with pollution-linked respiratory ailments and business groups say fear of smog-caused illness is deterring expats from relocating here....

1. A beautiful city....but never clear.
Always has the South China "haze".....they really need to deal with the pollution. Why China is promoting automobiles in Guangdong Province is beyond me.

2. Wow - you've got to be kidding me that pollution has gotten so bad there
I can't find the distance, but it's not that far from one side of the the harbor to the other, and they're saying that YOU CAN'T SEE THE OTHER SIDE MANY DAYS? Wow :wow:

Daily inundations of choking smog...have gravely reduced the number of days on which one side of the famous harbour is visible from the other.

On one side of Victoria Harbour are the crowded shores of the Kowloon Peninsula, with the North Point of Hong Kong Island visible at the bottom right corner of the image.

I hope that there's a large participation for this....and MORE IMPORTANTLY, that it has some "good effect".
