Universal Says It Doesn't Think Coulter Plagiarized

NEW YORK Universal Press Syndicate said today that it doesn't think controversial columnist Ann Coulter is guilty of plagiarism.

In a statement sent to E&P, Universal President and Editor Lee Salem said: "Last week a software program company official ran Ann Coulter's columns through a 'match-text' program, frequently used by teachers to detect original work. The New York Post cited two columns in which some text matched other published materials and also mentioned three snippets in her book, 'Godless, The Church of Liberalism.'

"In addition to looking at the columns mentioned in the New York Post story, we also reviewed a sampling of other columns that have been mentioned in the media. Like her book publisher, Crown, Universal Press Syndicate finds no merits to the allegations of plagiarism brought by the software company executive. There are only so many ways you can rewrite a fact and minimal matching text is not plagiarism.

"Universal Press Syndicate is confident in the ability of Ms. Coulter, an attorney and frequent media target, to know when to make attribution and when not to. We also have confidence in our 35-year history of detecting fraudulent and unethical work, having represented conservatives and liberal commentators alike."

3. There are only so many ways you can rewrite a fact
and minimal matching text is not plagiarism!!!!

Oh PLEASE....when it takes twenty four WORDS or more to write that fact, surely a quick perusal through the thesaurus might give one ANOTHER way of saying the same thing!!!!!

But, hey, what they are really saying is, ignore the pesky facts, they don't BELIEVE she plagiarized...

Faith based publishing, brought to you by the RNC, I guess!!!!

8. Exactly. Anyone who ever wrote a college paper knows that...
...any passage of five or more consecutive words of another writer requires attribution. Otherwise, the inclusion of the passage constitutes plagiarism.

14. Absolutely. She does not attribute, and that is *theft*
When the owner of the software firm appeared on Countdown last week, he noted that the attributions were either absent or appeared in odd places that made it unclear what info she was attributing to what source.

For instance, one passage was lifted from a source and then five paragraphs down she attributed another passage from that source, but there was no way to tell that the two passages came from the same source.

Sleazy publisher matches sleazy "writer."

O'Reilly gets a pass.
Limbaugh gets two passes.

It goes on and on. Has there ever been a time so corrupt?

13. They all plagiarize from one set of right-wing talking points anyway.
If the talking points say 'cut and run' she says 'cut and run'. If the talking points say 'waffle' she says 'waffle'.

It's one giant echo chamber over there. I'm surprised they don't lift entire articles from each other by accident every day.

20. Who gives a shit? I don't. If people want to buy his crappy book , let
them. Whether or not it is plagiarized is immaterial to me. I am not going to read it anyway, much less buy it or believe what it says. People like Coulter are best ignored. Any publicity is good publicity to him.
