snip> MOSUL, Iraq - The slaying of two U.S. soldiers and the mutilation of their bodies offended some in this neighborhood of dilapidated houses and potholed streets where the killing occurred. But few Iraqis were shocked by the brutality, and some even gloated.

"They kill people and barge in on families at night," Abdullah al-Mulla, who works in a gas station, said of U.S. forces. "If an American came to my house at night and took me away in front of my children, I would have to take revenge."

Such feelings are deeply held in a culture steeped in traditions of vendetta. Revenge killing is considered a moral act, even if the victim had committed no offense and was marked for death simply because of his identity.

"This is normal. If someone is killed his family has to take revenge," said Abed, the truck driver. "The Americans kill people by mistake and then apologize the next day. This doesn't work here."

Make sure you rate this a "5", the sheeple need to realize that this will only get worse. Ramadan is ending tomorrow, Tuesday. I am afraid it will be getting even worse now.

3. look at the kids
I watch the tv news and our guys rousting out the resistance (oops! not supposed to call them the resistance, right? Brings up too many connotations of brave guerillas fighting the Nazis.) and I watch the kids in the background. The young boys watching their fathers and brothers and relatives being dragged out in tyraps with bags over their heads.

Big mistake.

Makes you wonder why people can't learn from history.

9. They understand power and humiliation
So that's what they indulge in. When the inevitable backlash comes, the media chuckleheads and corrupt commentators tell a credulous public that "revenge" and "vendetta" are part of the Middle East culture. News flash, they're part of Western culture, too! How many U.S. viewers see the pummeling of the dead soldiers, and think, "By the Christ, those ragheads will pay for that!"

It's a peculiar blindness that justifies everything our folks in uniform do, while condemning any action taken by our new subjects.

7. Americans aren't any different
If the role was reversed we would do the same thing. Imagine Saddaam Hussein bombing and invading our country because he didn't like Bush. We riot when our football team wins, could you imagine our reaction if this happened?

The Guardian did have your original title.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-3426481,00.html

Your same Yahoo link now points to an AP article (being pulled from the Guardian) titled U.S. Troop Deaths Offending Some Iraqis

16. I know, Yahoo does have a habit of changing titles of their
stories. Not sure why I got slammed for posting the original title from this article. People seem to be real crabby today.

11. Resentment?
Perhaps rage would be a better word, or fury, or hatred, or despair.

15. The concept of killing people by mistake
...is an interesting one. Do the American guns go off by accident or is the trigger pulling intentional? I guess what they mean is that the shooters thought they were shooting an enemy but that they were wrong and shot somebody else. You can't even really call it collateral damage. Is recklessly spraying an area with gunfire accidental?

<The Americans kill people by mistake and then apologize the next day. This doesn't work here.">

The Iraqis have pretty high standards. It doesn't work here either.

17. note the "honor code"-each family who suffers may kill for revenge
If this is common then we have a big problem. Each of the families who have lost family members from this invasion and occupation may seek to even the score. If one troop is killed for each Iraqi that was lost then we may possibly see over 10 thousand American troops dead soon enough.
Bring our troops home now!!!

Even one American or one Iraqi death is TOO MUCH !!-it's not worth the oil.
