Antiwar Republican enters U.S. Senate race (hopes to unseat Lieberman)

Antiwar Republican enters U.S. Senate race

Rep. Diana S. Urban, R-North Stonington, says she's begun collecting 7,500 signatures in a bid to become a petitioning candidate for U.S. Senate in the November election.

The three-term representative, who has taught economics and political science at several colleges, said today that should she be certified as an official candidate, she would campaign against the war in Iraq and advocate government policies that favor "low- and moderate-income people" and small businesses.

...

Urban also said she favors reinstituting the draft, saying that children of the privileged generally have avoided serving in the nation's "all-volunteer" armed forces and that changes were likely if that were not the case.

...

Urban said she thinks the three-term incumbent she hopes to unseat, U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, is "out of touch" with the voters in "a very blue state who do not support this war in Iraq."

11. Well, the obvious one: that there will be two antiwar....
candidates on the general election ballot, assuming Lamont plasters Lieberman in the primary.

Perhaps the CT pols are just making sure that there are sufficient choices for the citizenry of that state. They are always looking out for the welfare of the citizenry up there.

Is that a note of suspicion I detect in your tone?

22. That's what I'm saying.
She might be lying just to get the anti-war vote if Leiberman wins the primary.

24. It may be smart for some "would-be-Dems" to run as Rethugs.
Then once in office vote with the Dems on everything. The southern and western Rethugs have been doing this for a long time, especially at the state and local levels. Shhhhhh. It's a secret.

Pro-invasion Dems against anti-invasion Repubs... Glad I live in Texas, where the conservatives are real right wing nutjobs, instead of pretend rightwing nutjobs.

5. I hope Connecticut Democrats don't fall for that. Lieberman is still a
Democrat which means his seat is important to gaining the majority. We can't do squat to check Bush as long as the Republicans control Congress.

10. What if the goal is ending the war? Voting for Lieberman is voting
to support war, occupation, and the idiocy of King George.
LIEberman said it was wrong to criticize the President.
Goodbye Joe.

13. Voting for a Republican is voting to support war, occupation, and the
idiocy of King George. Is this anti-war Republican going to vote for Harry Reid as Majority Leader or is she going to vote for son of Frist?

If what this article says is true, she's more Democratic than the Democrat Lieberman.

27. Old school Republican
More than a few were against the war. Jeannette Rankin of Montana was a pacifist who managed to vote against the US declaring war in both WWI and WWII. She was a progressive Republican (think Bull Moose, LaFollette type), course of the type very rarely seen these days.

33. A stalking horse.
Urban soaks up some independent antiwar republican leaning votes that would otherwise go to Lamont in a three way race, helping Lieberman (Asshat, Corporate America) win.
