Iraq on the right path, US ambassador tells Congress
Iraq on the right path, US ambassador tells Congress
by Stephanie Griffith

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States has reason to feel "strategically optimistic" about the future of Iraq, Washington's envoy to Baghdad, Zalmay Khalilzad, said, despite rampant sectarian bloodshed.

"Americans should be strategically optimistic about Iraq, even as the continuing difficulties in Iraq will require tactical patience," said Khalilzad, appearing before the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.

The envoy hailed various "positive developments which give the Iraqi government and friends of Iraq real hope," particularly in the political arena.

"Political progress that has been made in Iraq has created opportunities and put Iraq on the right trajectory," he said.

5. Your post reminds me of that song by Papa John:
"I was in the wrong place, but it must have been the right time."

Nguyen Ngoc Loan executes Viet Cong Captain Nguyen Van Lem: February 1, 1968. This Associated Press photograph, "General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong prisoner in Saigon," won a 1969 Pulitzer prize for its photographer Eddie Adams. Film also exists of this event, but owing to the more graphic nature of the film, the photograph is more widely known.

7. The photo you show is really something. You can actually
see an extended film clip of same episode on disc 3 of "Vietnam: A Television History" (the PBS documentary produced under the rubric of the American Experience program). Disc 3 covers Tet '68, Vietnamization and Cambodia\Laos. The best disc of the 4-disc set, imho.

15. The film should be required viewing for all Americans, especially
American high school students approaching age of enlistment. If I ever get a teaching job in LAUSD, I plan to use it in class.

10. Isn't this the same ambassador that sent the memo about the REAL
situation in Iraq and how it is affecting Iraqi embassy employees? Do all bushites have total memory lapse immediately after telling the truth in the written form?

Apparently Senators Kerry, Feingold and Boxer did question this polyanna view of Iraq. CNN in its coverage referred to Kerry's questions as "testy", which I think is CNN language for not accepting everything on faith.

13. The Comptroller General of the USA had a very different song to sing
at the House hearings on Tuesday... His is a non-political appointment, by the way. He was chosen by the Republican Congress in 1994 and nominated by Clinton and then confirmed by the Senate. One Rep. Congressman (a backbencher who did not have Ken Doll hair, therefore, I don't recall his name) tried to inject politics into his very detailed testimony. He beat that charge down like a pro. The rest of the House Gov. Reform Committee (Dennis K. is ranking member and Bernie Sanders is also on it) were most impressed by his nonpartisan analyses.

I was too. Then came the government spokesmen. There is no real waste in Iraqi reconstruction. There is a tremendous increase in electrical production in the country (Yes, ten hours a day from 4 is a tremendous growth) in the past year, the Iraqi army is growing, yadda, yadda, yadda...

19. Strategic optimism and tactical patience
Is that like "the operation was a success, too bad the patient died"?

From what I can tell, Khalilzad is saying that if we just believe hard enough, everything will turn out all right in the end. So keep clapping, you lot, or Tinker Bell dies!
