Hunger Strike Called to Protest Iranian Crackdown
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/13/world/middleeast/13cnd-tehran.html

TEHRAN, July 13 — Human rights advocates in Iran and abroad are increasing their pressure on the Iranian government over a crackdown in recent months against human rights advocates and other protesters.

Students inside Iran have called for a global hunger strike for three days, starting on Friday, to draw attention to what they said was President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s policies “that are reminiscent of some of the darkest days of the Islamic Republic.”

And on Tuesday, human rights activists in Tehran held a press conference condemning the massive arrest of activists in the past year. The call for a hunger strike was initiated by Akbar Ganji, a rights advocate who was released in March after being imprisoned for five years and who is currently in the United States.
