'Hands on America' flag to head overseas
Very sad, the flag was created as a message for hope and peace and is now going to represent "patriotism" in the "War on terror"

MOLINE, IL- A student-made American flag that traveled throughout the United States last year will head overseas this year.

A suggestion from a WQAD-TV-DT NewsChannel 8 viewer in Princeton, Illinois was selected by the students. Nancy Anderson suggested the flag be sent to her son, KC-10 flight engineer Charles Schmied, who is serving in the Middle East.

The "Hands on America" flag was made by students at Bettendorf's Rivermont Collegiate school as a message of hope and peace after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Last year, students sent the flag to former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani who sent it on to a fire station that lost firefighters on 9/11. From there it travelled to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California, and Texas before returning to Bettendorf in September of this year.

1. What ever happened to the 9-11 flag?

Supposely this was the flag that was ripped from a boat and flew over the World Trade Center wreckage. It went on tour (to Iraq?) and then suddenly disappeared.

Ah ... here's the story. Ignore the dateline, I believe this story is either from 9/2002 or 9/2003.

Famous flag raised by firefighters over World Trade Center wreckage has disappeared

HACKENSACK, N.J. — The American flag that was raised by three firefighters over the wreckage of the World Trade Center, one of the most enduring images of Sept. 11, has disappeared.

After it was removed from the site during cleanup, the flag was believed to have been flown on U.S. ships serving in the war in Afghanistan, then returned to New York City officials in March.

But the flag that city officials preserved measures 5 feet by 8 feet. The flag the firefighters raised on Sept. 11 measured 4 feet by 6 feet, according to its original owners.

"It's just a really awkward and difficult situation," said Lark-Marie Anton, a spokeswoman for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "What it represents is really what's important."

Bloomberg has asked city fire officials to investigate what happened to the flag.

2. The flag was given back to the owner-
who said that it was a different flag than the one from his boat that became the "9-11 flag". I think he was going to donate it to the Smithsonian...but I don't think the original has actually been located to this day...maybe it's locked up with geronimo's skull somewhere?
