Evangelist (Kent Hovind) arrested on tax evasion
Evangelist arrested on tax evasion

Michael Stewart
@PensacolaNewsJournal.com

A Pensacola evangelist was arrested Thursday and indicted in federal court on 58 charges that include income tax evasion, making threats against investigators and filing false complaints against Internal Revenue Service agents.

For some backstory, Hovind is a creationist lecturer who owns a creationist theme park in Pensacola. He also refuses to pay taxes. It was only a matter of time before this happened.

I just sent the link to my Creationist coworker who tried to talk me into paying $40 to see Hovind speak at a church in Oceanside last year.

The guy is a Class A shyster, a huckster, a flim-flam, a grifter, a con artist.

16. There is no New Testament basis for not paying your taxes.
Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 09:51 PM by Hissyspit
as far as I know.

The "coin in the fish" story involving Peter is about paying the TEMPLE tax, not a government tax, which Jesus would not be due to pay as the 'son' of God, but Peter assumes he should pay. Jesus says pay it anyway, so as not to offend.

The oft-quoted "Render the things unto Caesar that are Caesar's, render the things to God that are God's" statement to the Pharisee's is deliberately ambiguous about paying tax to GOVERNMENT. He is not trying to answer whether taxes are to be paid. He is pointing out to the Pharisee's their hypocrisy in trying to capture him in a 'yes or no' answer:

"The coin bearing Caesar's image set up Jesus' second move, the famous saying itself: "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

In context, the saying is thoroughly ambiguous. The word "render" means "give back." The first half of the saying could thus mean, "It's Caesar's coin--go ahead and give it back to him." We can imagine Jesus saying this with a dismissive shrug. Rather than a pronouncement about the legitimacy of Roman imperial rule or political authority in general, his words might very well have been a brilliant way of evading the trap.

When its second half is added, the phrase remains equally ambiguous. What belongs to Caesar, and what belongs to God? The possible answers range from "Pay your tribute tax to Caesar, and your temple tax to God" to "Everything belongs to God." If the latter, what is owed to Caesar? Nothing. But the text itself provides no clue as to what was meant.

Jesus responded in a deliberately enigmatic way in order to avoid the trap set by his opponents. His response was never meant to be figured out. Rather, in this passage as in several others, we see his deft debating skill.

Thus this text offers little or no guidance for tax season. It neither claims taxation is legitimate nor gives aid to anti-tax activists. It neither counsels universal acceptance of political authority nor its reverse."

9. From Wikipedia
Biography

Hovind said on February 9, 1969 he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He graduated from East Peoria High School in 1971. He claims three degrees in Christian education from unaccredited institutions of higher learning. Hovind is married and has three children and 4 grandchildren.<1>

In 1975 Hovind started a Baptist Christian school and church, at which he pastored and taught. <1> Over the years he claimed to have been high school teacher at Christian schools.<1> Hovind has no teaching credential or academic degrees from accredited universities in the subjects he taught. In 1989, Hovind started his Creation Science Evangelism with no academic background in science.<2>

Hovind was charged on September 13, 2002 for failure to observe county zoning regulations.<3> On June 5 2006, Hovind pled nolo contendere as charged to three counts: constructing a building without a permit, refusing to sign a citation and violating the county building code. Hovind was ordered to pay $225 per count. The plea brings to an end a 5-year battle over a $500 building permit. Hovind estimates he spent $40,000 in legal expenses on this case. Meanwhile, the property taxes for Dinosaur Adventure Land are in arrears in an amount of $10,338.36 ($4,955.23 for 2005 and 5,383.13 for 2003 and 2004) <2>.

In 2002, he was charged with one count of felony assault, one count misdemeanor battery, and one count assault and burglary.<4> In December 2002, the charges were dropped by the alleged victim, Hovind's secretary.<3>

When the internet came into the mainstream Hovind created his "Dr. Dino" web site and began producing articles and information as well as selling his products — video tapes, books, fossil replicas, etc. — to a mass market. None of his material is copyrighted and he encourages people to copy his material and distribute it to others. Hovind speaks at hundreds of churches, schools, and other venues each year and he has been a featured speaker at many of the Steeling the Mind Bible Conferences. He also hosts a daily radio talk show and has established Dinosaur Adventure Land (see below) in Pensacola, Florida. Hovind derives "substantial revenue" from these activities that appears to be "income to personally."<5> According to the IRS, Hovind "has made deposits to bank accounts well in excess of $1 million per year." <6>

Indoctrination or Education?

Well, thank you for joining us today. My name is Kent Hovind; I live in Pensacola, Florida. I was a high school science teacher 15 years. And now I travel around and speak on creation, evolution and dinosaurs. In the first sessions we talked about the age of the Earth and how dinosaurs fit into the Bible; but in this session I want to talk about things in the textbooks that you kids have to face when you go to school in a secular school or a secular university. Things that simply are not true.

The Dilemma
And it’s always amazed me in my 15 years of teaching science how two people can look at the same thing and come to opposite conclusions of what they are looking at. Two people can look at Grand Canyon. They are both looking at the same canyon. One guy believes in evolution, so he looks at the canyon and he says, "Wow, look what the Colorado River did for millions and millions of years." The Bible believing Christian stands there, looks at the same canyon and says, "Wow, look what the flood did in about 30 minutes." How was that canyon formed? Was it a little bit of water and a whole lot of time. or could it be a whole lot of water and a little bit of time? Sometimes there are two different ways to look at things. And if a teacher is only showing you one way to look at things, they’re not educating you, they’re indoctrinating you. Which may be good—the Bible is good for doctrine. However, in the humanist school system, I’m afraid kids get indoctrinated with evolution only and they’re never shown the other way to look at things.

The Calf Puller
I’ll give you another example. Anybody in the crowd know what this thing is? Yes sir, what is it? That is a calf puller. A what? A calf puller? Yes. You see, once in a while a cow has a hard time having that baby calf and so they get the calf puller out there, put the cable around the calf’s legs and jack the calf out of the cow. You get a few tons of pressure on there and the calf will come right out—no problem. Well this farmer was out pulling a calf one day. It was a breach birth—the back feet were coming out first. Not good. And so the farmer had the calf puller out there and he’s trying to pull the calf out. And a city fellow stopped his car to see what on earth is going on. And the farmer said, "Wait, come here and give me a hand will you?" And the city fellow said, "Me? I don’t know anything about cows." He said, "Just give me some help, would ya?" He said, "Okay, okay." So the city fellow helped him pull the calf and about ten minutes later they are walking up to the barn, going to get washed up. And the farmer said, "Have you ever seen anything like this before?" And the city fellow said, "No sir, I‘ve never seen anything like this." The farmer said, "You got any questions?" He said, "Yes sir, I’ve got one question, it’s been bugging me for ten minutes." The farmer said, "What’s your question?" The city fellow said, "Sir, how fast do you figure that calf was going when it ran into that cow?" No, no, no, no you are looking at this all wrong fella. We are not separating a wreck here. Sometimes two people look at the same thing and one of them is getting the wrong idea.

Scoffers
You know, the Bible warned us that was going to happen. In II Peter chapter 3 it says, "Knowing this first, there shall come in the last days scoffers." Did you know there are people that scoff at the Bible? I deal with them on a regular basis. I attract them like a magnet! Scoffers.

Why They Scoff

And it says they are going to walk after their own lusts. See, the reason they scoff at this Book is because of their sin, not because of their science. There is no scientific reason to reject the Bible. But they don’t like this Bible because it chaps their hide. Well, get some Vaseline, man, you are going to need it! Because we’re going to be judged according to this book—whether you like it or not.

MUCH MORE ENTERTAINING NONSENSE AT THE SIGHT

He will claim martyrdom, of course.

11. Here's some more of his nonsense. He claims circular reasoning
Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 08:55 PM by Hissyspit
where none exists.

Circular Reasoning

But oftentimes there are two ways to look at things. (How fast was that calf going?) I took my family one time when I was preaching in Union Center, South Dakota. Now, Union Center, South Dakota is not quite the end of the world, but we could see it from there. We were close. I mean, it’s the middle of nowhere. There were forty people in the whole town. Thirty-eight of them came to church. (I don’t know where the other two were, out pulling a calf I reckon.) But anyway, we had a great meeting. And the preacher said, "Hey, Brother Hovind, lets get the cars and vans and lets go down to Rapid City, South Dakota, where they’ve got a museum with a bunch of dinosaur bones in it." I said, "Alright, I like dinosaurs, lets go."

In the Museum

So we all drove down to Rapid City, South Dakota. We walked in this museum and a guide, an older fellow met us at the door and he said, "I’m a guide here, would you like me to give you a tour?" We said, "that would be great, sir." The first place we stopped on the tour was a great big huge chart all lit up called the ‘Geologic Time Scale.’ The geologic column. And the guy started his speech right there. He said, "ladies and gentlemen, this layer of rock you’re looking at here, is about 70 millions of years old." My daughter was twelve at the time. She raised her hand. She said, "Sir, how do you know how old the rock layers are?" He said, "That’s a good question honey. We tell the age of the rock layers by the types of fossils they contain. They’re called index fossils." She said, "thank you, sir." We walked around the other side of the dinosaur. We’re standing over there and the guide said, "Now, ladies and gentlemen, these bones you’re looking at here are about a hundred million years old," or something like that. And my daughter raised her hand again. She said, "Uh, sir—how do you tell the age of the fossils?" He said, "That’s a good question honey. We tell the age of the fossils by which layer they come from." She said, "Excuse me sir, but when we were standing over there, you told me you knew the age of the layers by the fossils and now you’re telling me you know the age of the fossils by the layers." She said, "isn’t that circular reasoning?" I thought, "Wow, a chip off the old block!" That guide had the strangest look on his face. It was almost as if he were thinking. He looked at my daughter; he looked at me. I wasn’t about to help him. I thought, "Wow! This is going to be good!" He looked back at my daughter and he said, "You know, you are absolutely right. I never thought of that before." He said, "That is circular reasoning."
That poor fellow drove fifty miles one way that night to hear me preach in Union Center, South Dakota. The crowd swelled to thirty-nine. We set up a chair in the aisle. Afterwards, he talked to me for nearly an hour. He said, "Mr. Hovind, is everything I believe about geology wrong?" He said, "I teach this stuff at the college." I said, "Oh no, no. Man, I like geology. You learn lots of good stuff. You learn all the names of the minerals." Just that’s a good trick folks. There are 1200 minerals, some have names about that long. I said, "you learn to prospect for ore, the hardness test, the Rockwell test, the scratch test." I said, "No, no. I like geology and there’s nothing wrong with geology. But as far as the layers being different ages," I said, "Yes sir, that’s all bologna."

29. Kent E. Hovand

Creationist is Target of IRS

For those of you who know Kent Hovind, one of the last of a dying breed of Young Earth Creationists (Earth 10,000 years old, dinos had their own deck on Noah’s Ark, the Grand Canyon was carved in two weeks during the Flood, etc.), and the single most loquacious speaker I have ever seen (he could do the voice over for those medical commericals where they rattle off the hundred different possible side effects in the final six seconds of the commercial), the following story will be of some interest. We may live in a Christian nation, but no one is exempt from the IRS (well, almost no one—Scientology has had a pretty good go of it against them). By the way, I’m scheduled to debate Hovind at the University of California, Irvine, on Thursday evening, April 29th. The story follows…
IRS Raids Business, Home of Creationist

by Brett Norman

Internal Revenue Service agents are investigating a Pensacola man who operates a creationist theme park and museum off Old Palafox Road and who they say is evading taxes on more than $1 million in income.

This week, federal IRS agents raided the home and businesses of Kent Hovind, 51, in the first block of Cummings Road, confiscating all computer and paper records of financial activity since January 1997.

The creation-science evangelist argues against evolution around the world. He also sells literature and videos supporting his views and charges admission to his Pensacola theme park and museum through a number of entities.

But in a sworn statement made to obtain the search warrant served Wednesday, IRS agent Scott Schneider said none of Hovind’s enterprises has a business license in Escambia County or has tax-exempt status as a nonprofit enterprise.

36. Dr. Dino interview
We got to do an hour long interview with Dr. Dino as part of a documentary film we are shooting on the publishing world of Jack T. Chick. Good luck with your debate (April 29th next year?), while the theories they propose seem crazy, the person himself is actually extremely articulate. Like you said, a great pitch man. Nothing like what I expected.
When we did the filming almost a year ago I think they were already prepping for the IRS battle. Seemed almost like they were welcoming the challenge, but was not part of our Q&A so I cannot say for certain.

Two Snohomish County men accused of anti-tax scheme
Lawsuit says they used religion ruse in avoidance plot
By CANDACE HECKMAN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Federal authorities are accusing two Snohomish County men of promoting a widespread scheme encouraging people to renounce government authority and avoid paying taxes by claiming to be religious entities. U.S. attorneys filed a lawsuit against Glen Stoll of Edmonds and Michael Stevens of Everett, seeking a permanent injunction against the men's asset-protection programs ... The men are also being accused of falsely claiming to be lawyers and advising their clients, who have been targeted for IRS audits, to repeatedly cancel appointments and attempt to physically avoid tax investigators ... Stevens was arrested at the compound during a federal raid in August 1993 and was released nearly a month later after refusing to sign documents for his release. Both he and Stoll have been arrested for driving unregistered vehicles sporting Embassy of Heaven license plates ...
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/212422_corpsole17.html

... Mr. Hovind referred questions to Glen Stoll, director of the legal firm, Remedies at Law. Mr. Stoll also represents Embassy of Heaven, a cult that believes it is the embassy from the Kingdom of God to the US government and therefore does not need to abide by federal, state, or local laws, a view Mr. Hovind apparently also holds ...

32. "Scoffers in the last days?"
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 08:40 AM by onager
"Knowing this first, there shall come in the last days scoffers."

Well, the "last days" must have started around the year 33 CE. People started mocking the Xian worldview as soon as it got loose.

I think it was that noted scoffer the Emperor Diocletian who described them best with his famous one-liner: "Your entire philosophy consists of the single word 'believe.'"

Unfortunately the Xers grabbed political power, starting with Constantine, and for several thousand years terrorized much of the world into going along with their nonsense.

IMO, give them half a chance and they'd do the same thing again--whether they are the type of Xian who does phony faith healings on TBN, or the type who lives in Rome wearing a gold prom dress and a funny hat. (This should not be construed as an attack solely on Xians. I'm an atheist and I think the same thing about most religions. And don't even get me started on $cientology...)

To the OP, thanks a lot. Wonderful news. It's about time Dr. Dino got his.

Hovind and his wife who were indicted, not his church. People commit crimes, not churches. And what happened to the "personal responsibility" that the fundies are always braying about? You might try that out on your fundie friend.
