Guantanamo chief to become NATO top commander
Gen. Bantz Craddock, the chief of U.S. Southern Command who oversees the controversial Guantanamo prison, is to succeed Gen. James Jones as NATO's top commander of operations, the alliance said on Friday.

Craddock will replace Jones as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at a date yet to be determined, NATO said in a statement released in Brussels after President George W. Bush proposed Craddock for the post.

"The NATO Defense Planning Committee, which takes this decision, agreed but also expressed to General Jones, in the name of NATO governments, their gratitude for his distinguished service," it said.

Jones, a U.S. Marine, became SACEUR based in Mons, southern Belgium, in 2003 and had been widely expected to end his tour by the end of the year.

2. Everyone who does their dirty work gets a promotion. Rule of their
law. Someone tell me that this guy is a good one to disprove the theory and fact, so far.

It seems if there is going to be any kind of legal problems down the road for any of their operatives - they seem to purify them by placing them in these prominent positions - Bolton, Wolfkowitz, this guy(?).

Kind of like they've done to the national guard, the UN and any other world or domestic institution that interferes with their fun.

5. was the senior military assistant to Rumsfeld
Craddock, a graduate of West Virginia University and an armor officer by training, was the senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld for two years before becoming commander of U.S. Southern Command in November 2004. That command is responsible for the controversial detention center at Guantanamo Bay, as well as U.S. military operations in and around Latin America and the Caribbean.

Craddock's successor as senior military assistant to Rumsfeld, Navy Vice Adm. James G. Stavritis, has been nominated to succeed him at Southern Command.

9. Absolutely predictably hideous idea placing a Rumsfeld assistant there.
The world needs far more wholesome leaders in positions of power.

It seems this Bush Reign of Terror has been in charge forever.

8. Too bad. If he retired, I'm sure * would give him the Medal of Freedom
...but I think you have to be a civilian for that now completely meaningless award.

10. NATO is nothing but a tool of American imperialism
so it shouldn't come as a surprise that a general that committed crimes against humanity gets a promotion to Brussels.

General Craddock also made a lot of threats towards Venezuela and Cuba while at Southern Command.
