Far-Right racists join the (Anti-Globalisation) protests
Oh dear

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/07/14/wgeight114.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/07/14/ixnews.html

Anti-capitalist protests have always brought together some strange bedfellows, but Igor Kavolyov and his Anti-Globalisation Movement of Russia are probably the oddest of all.

His white supremacists will join human rights activists, environmentalists, campaigners for better pensions and anarchists in protesting against the G8 summit.

"Thanks to the march of globalisation, our national identity, religion and culture, as well as the purity of the white races, are threatened with extinction," he said at a furtively arranged meeting in St Petersburg. "Why are there so many Muslims in the UK? Why are there so many non-ethnic Russians in Russia? It is all part of a plot by the culturally and intellectually inferior negroid races to subsume the white nationalities."

Such views are not uncommon in St Petersburg, one of Europe's most racist cities, but until now the ideology of the far Right has been absent from the anti-globalist movement.

5. Get some perspective.
Organized radical nationalists in Russia number about 500,000. Among them are an estimated 50,000 organized and public neo-nazis. There are around 10,000 in Moscow alone. Organized neo-nazis in Russia regularly assault and murder non-Russians. In 2003, there were 20 murders attributed to neo-Nazis. In 2004, there were 40. There have been 28 racially motivated murders so far this year, nine in April alone.

Murderous though these thugs are, they are far from stupid. Street fighting is only the beginning of what these groups are doing. In Russia, the neos don't hole up in a fortress in the woods. They run for office. They cooperate across likeminded organizations inside Russia and around the world - even with groups in the United States. What's more, they've been at this for over a decade.

These aren't Freepers. These aren't the 101st Fighting Keyboarders. These are politically organized, trained, and armed Nazis in the streets of Russia.

It's one thing to draw analogies and make jokes about Bushitler, but to minimize the problem of nationalist extremists in Russia by labeling them as simply "Freepers" is another thing entirely. Most folks on Free Republic and most Republicans have as much disgust for Nazis and neo Nazis as we do, and quite a few of the neo-Nazis have just as much disgust for the Freepers as you do. These two groups are not the same. Freepers aren't stabbing nine year old girls in the face for being the wrong nationality, they're not bursting into synagogues and stabbing people, and they're not firebombing people's apartments. They're voting in a way you don't agree with, and they're making posts on an Internet forum that you dislike. It just doesn't measure up to a knife in the face, does it?

4. "Why are there so many non-ethnic Russians in Russia?"
... Perhaps because the ethnic Russians conquered 'em all in the last few centuries? Just a thought. I mean, it's crazy, but it might be true.

I'm starting to see the point of those huge, glossy, hardcover, expensive-as-hell history survey texts freshmen always have to buy new editions of every year. They can make a most satisfying crunch if you swing them hard enough at someone who needs one.

6. Far right racists also were anti-imperialists 100 years ago. I read this
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 12:16 AM by 1932
in, IIRC, Stephen Kinzer's Overthrow. There were plenty of anti-imperialists who were smart and definitely not racists (like Mark Twain and, IIRC, Grover Cleveland). But, unfortunately, there were many who thought that brown people were so terrible that it would demean Americans to even try to possess their land. That didn't mean that anti-imperialists like Twain were wrong or stupid.

In fact, I think history proves that Twain was exactly right about imperialism. And history is repeating itself today. Twain's anti-globalist heirs are probably right, despite that some misguided racists are also anti-globalization.
