Edwards and Spratt call on DCCC to pull down web video

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic Reps. Chet Edwards (Texas) and John Spratt (S.C.) have called on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to pull down a controversial web video that uses images of flag-draped coffins and a grave of a fallen soldier.

The two Democrats sent letters to DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Illinois) asking him to remove the video, "America Needs a New Direction,"from its website after Republicans accused Democrats of trying to gain politically from the pictures. Emanuel urged political supporters in a fundraising e-mail sent Tuesday to view the video on the DCCC's website.

"I would not have included the clip showing the flag-draped caskets or the clip showing a soldier standing at the grave of a fallen comrade," Spratt wrote Thursday in his letter to Emanuel. "I strongly recommend that you pull this ad and delete both of these clips before running it again."

...

A DCCC spokesman told the Grind this morning they had no comment on the letters. But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) defended the video yesterday and pointed out that President Bush's top political adviser Karl Rove has spoken about how the GOP needs to capitalize politically on the war.

8. It's time for a DU effort.
We need to make a video, of stills of each of us giving the finger. One of those videos where the stills are patched together and where the image changes quickly.

Tasteless? Most certainly, but one where the meaning would not be lost on the two maroons mentioned above.

9. Republicans are right
The dems will gain politically because everytime I see a picture of a flag draped coffin carrying one of my fallen comrades, I tear up and regret that I can vote only once against a republican. How dare the dems use the truth as a political weapon.

Sounds like the same old song - "lets not do that because it might upset the republicans." I live to upset republicans.

12. The DCCC video represents the truth. And sometimes the truth hurts.
But the truth must be told. Those numbers that keep climbing up and up represent devastated lives. Not just the soldiers who have died, but their parents, brothers, sisters, spouses, and their children - who will grow up not knowing how wonderful their parent was. They won't feel the love of a parents arms comforting them when they're afraid or hurt. They will never know the joy of telling their parent about the accomplishments they've made.

And every day that passes, every hour, every minute, every bullet that is fired has the opportunity to steal another life from this world. And it's all based on lies.

Any American who wants to censor the news, prevent the images from being shown, prevent the truth from being known is a traitor. To their country, and to the friends and families of every fallen soldier.

This is not a game. This is serious. And anything that helps to bring our soldiers in harm's way home to their loved ones is worthwhile. To say that this ad should not be shown is cowardly. Stop protecting the people who have stolen so many lives. Tell them to bring the soldiers home so there won't be any more flag draped coffins to photograph!

STOP THE WAR - NOT THE AD - THE WAR IS A LIE!

15. This is the problem with the democrats...
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 02:50 PM by butterfly77
every time those hypocrites on in the republicons shout"IT'S OUTRAGEOUS!" They get afraid and back down. The dems need a whole new set of people they always play into their hands with this politically correct bullshit. They are afraid because the ad shows soldiers caskets, repugs use them when they feel it helps them but don't want them shown by the dems.

The american people are not stupid they know the soldiers are dying so what is the problem, the only problem I see is that the repugs know that the more it is shown people will start to want to know why they haven't seen them before now.

16. if the point was that the soldiers died for nothing, then...
that point is well-said. If you bothered checking the status of Iraq, you would have to admit that we are not winning (i.e., we are losing) the war. This war wasn't winnable to begin with, it was meant to be a gravy-train for Shrub's favorite campaign donors. The invasion was illegal. It was not warranted. It was based on lies and intelligence failures. Any soldier that is killed or wounded over there, he/she has wasted their life for nothing but to appease a fool and simpleton who cheated his way into the presidency two times. Pictures of the flag-drapped coffins are the only truth we've had out of this war so far. Everything else has been a lie.

21. There is a price for their foreign adventurism-our kids!
The Chickenhawks like to pretend it is all about flag waving and jingoistic speeches, both of which they excel at. They like to pretend that is all there is to it. Make them confront the reality of the body bags, which are much more obscene than the pristine flag covered caskets.

The DCCC shouldn't back up a single millimeter on this one.

23. Bush and his Republican rubberstampers would like to see the dead
soldiers just disappear. Yeah, they areo utraged. Outraged that these dead soldiers are a real reminder of the messs that the Republican incompetence has created.

They obviously know it. I'd promote that piece every chance we can. Make the Republicans defend their outrage. Because, the bottom line, is that they dishonor our soldiers by hiding this from the American people. They can't have it both ways.

Here's another good commercial for the Dems. Show a C-130 transport loading a $100BB worth of $10 bills and dumping them over Iraq. I wonder how many planes would be needed to fly $100BB to Iraq?

38. it's one thing to die fighting in a just war
like the 'good fight' against Axis in WWII, but this is hardly a comparison. Iraq did invade Kuwait, but the Iraqi army retreated. So why wait 10 years later and invade? No justification for this war. That's what the repugs are afraid of.

34. We're not allowed to debate this war...
Any mention of the killings of our soldiers and Iraqi civilians is met with a loud shush by our overlords, because it appears to be bad taste to distract the American public from American Idol, the latest pirate movie and whether they'll spend their consumer dollars on Windows or a Mac.

Republicans discuss the war - openly say they'll "run using the war as a strength", but that's as far sa the discussion is allowed to go - Republican rulers right, unwashed public ignored. God forbid someone like Lieberman has to lower himself to explain his position to the voters. He was angry doing so.

Showing a flag draped coffin might provoke a real debate about the merits of our occupation, and that's not allowed in the Fatherland.

Nobody trashes a Democrat like another Democrat. And you've gotta love the so-called Democratic "centrists" always taking the Republican talking points at face value and adopting them as their own.

Keep it up just like that, Democrats, and you'll gurantee you'll lose 2006 as well.
