Vatican condemns Israel for attacks on Lebanon
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."

"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio.

But Sodano reserved his harshest words for Israel.

"The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations," he said.

2. So where is their condemnation of the Hezbollah's bombing of Israel?
Must be waiting for the U.N.'s first.

5. Perhaps you should have checked for yourself before making accusations
The Holy See condemned Israel’s attack on a “free and sovereign” Lebanon and “terrorist” actions by the Lebanon-based Hezbollah, as both risk the conflict growing into a conflagration with international repercussions, and strongly urged that sincere negotiations begin.

"As in the past, the Holy See also condemns both the terrorist attacks on the one side and the military reprisals on the other,” Cardinal Sodano said.

19. Considering that the Vatican doesn't have a military
Wouldn't you consider that a prudent course of action?

Enjoy your stay at DU, however short it is.

33. they have a HUGE security force. Just try to commit a crime in VatCity.
most of them are undercover. Is it of the same size and arms with which they killed millions over the past centuries? no. But just because you can't see them, does not mean they are not there. Seriously, head to Rome and try to pull a stunt, like an anti-papal poster and see what happens.

29. Actually Lebanon is around 30% Catholic
So this isn't completely unrelated. The President by law must be a Catholic too (while the Prime Minister must be a Muslim)

7. The Vatican also condemned Hizzbolah

The Yahoo source is obviously being biased in its reporting on what was said by the Vatican.

8. Obviously biased? Why?
The Yahoo source says "Sodano said the Vatican condemned both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals." Why is that 'obvious bias'?

9. Read the Yahoo article again
Notice how the Yahoo article doesn't cite the exact quote?

That's an old reporter's trick to place less emphasis on the statement made.

From what I understand yahoo just pulls stories off the wire from groups like AP and Reuters.

10. So will all Catholics who disagree be excommunicated?
Colorado voters were pretty much told they had to agree with the Vatican on abortion. Does this apply to all Church positions?

20. Nope, only to abortion (and probably soon "pro-family" anti-gay marriage)
The war doctrine is still pretty much "optional" and you are allowed to debate the "just war" definition. There will be no expected consistency.

I've seen that a few times and have no idea what it means. Same thing with BFEE(?) I'm usually pretty good at figuring that stuff but I'm at a loss with those.

30. Can we get over things that happened 500 years ago?
Geez, I'm no fan of this Pope or the Catholic Church by any stretch, but acting as if this somehow has any relevance is pretty damn stupid. Hell, it was actually the government of Spain that carried out the Inquisition, does that mean the current Socialist government is forever tainted by it and has no moral standing?

32. No, not really. Because on some basic doctrines, they haven't changed.
On the other hand, for the first time in decades, I applaud what the church has said on the issue of Israel and its current war.

22. His name conveys his concern
A. He knows people are out to start a major war against many Islamic states

B. Those states have large Christian populations(Iraq's ancient communities have fled in large numbers)

C. The war has been framed and can be refined as a religious war.

D. In the ensuing chaos the Church will suffer immensely and be a target from top to bottom.

E. The crazy Armageddon Mammonites will sow chaos everywhere.

So, regardless of how he sees his role or effectiveness or ideological part in any of this, Benedict XV is trying to mitigate war, believes he will not be able to, and is settling for staying righteously apart to be later able to minister to the pieces and maintain the great socio-religious order that may go down the drain in frenzied dreams of power, greed and heretical fanaticism. The last Benedict immensely feared that atheism and anarchy threatened the order of things as well as trying to help the dislocated and suffering masses after the Great War. It is very very scary if the purposely named next benedict is signaling that this must be his inevitable place in history.
