A youth charged in what’s been billed as this country’s largest counterterrorism operation since 9-11 was back home with family Friday after becoming the first of 17 terror suspects to be granted bail.
“As the courts always remind us, there is no offence under the criminal code for which bail is not a possibility,” said Grill, who added his client was back with his family.
The release comes one day after a member of Toronto’s Muslim community claimed to have infiltrated the group to act as an informant for the RCMP. Mubin Shaikh told several media outlets he did so to protect Canadians and Muslims alike.
Sharryn Aiken, professor of law at Queen’s University, said the fact that a justice of the peace released the 18-year old on bail after hearing the evidence raises some questions.
“It’s some preliminary indication that these charges, which have been trumped up it the media, may indeed end up not amounting to much,” said Aiken.
