AP: First Half of 2006 Is Warmest on Record
First Half of 2006 Is Warmest on Record
Jul 14
WASHINGTON

The first half of the year was the warmest on record for the United States.

The government reported Friday that the average temperature for the 48 contiguous United States from January through June was 51.8 degrees Fahrenheit, or 3.4 degrees above average for the 20th century.

That made it the warmest such period since recordkeeping began in the National Climatic Data Center reported.

No state was cooler than average and five states -- Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri -- experienced record warmth for the period....

***

Worldwide, it was the sixth warmest year-to-date since record keeping began in 1880.

1. And still the global warming deniers are hard at it.
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 12:56 AM by swag
This morning I saw a Gannett article in the Great Falls Tribune giving many column inches to a douchebag from the Competitive Enterprise Institute poo-pooing global warming.

6. It's from the CEI
...Given that they've yet to put out ANY honest or actual information regarding global warming, does it even matter?

(The answer is "No.")

8. Come on, then, defend the work, if you feel so strongly about it.
You're asking someone who thinks it sucks to "invest" in it.

That's certainly a waste of effort, they clearly want to poop on it, and they have so done.

If it means anything to you, brush those turds aside, and tell us why we should care???

2. Oh common...a majority of climate scientist (2%?) agree that there is NO
global warming. Those 98% of scientists who "think" (or scientifically discovered...yeah...whatever) there is global warming are pinkie communist liberals. The oil industry just didn't pay them enough to change their minds. Idiots...they could have had a lot of money for lying...what idiot would prefer honesty over money??? Only liberal scumbags would....

10. This was on the weather channel late
last night as well. The weather channel special mentioned that the warmest states ...were Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and of course Missouri...:) There might have been a few more, on that list, but I know the ones I listed, where on the list...

Also, to note. Last August, it hit over 90 degrees in my hometown in Alaska, Ketchikan, Alaska to be exact. I believe, it was the highest temperature for my hometown, on record. Imagine, 90 plus degrees in Alaska...

12. George AWOL Bush: "I don't BELIEVE in global warming."
"And Rush Libaugh -- after ingesting Massive Quantitites of Super fine Drugs -- does not BELIEVE in it either. So you can just take all your scientific evidence and facts and stuff like that and stuff it. Just turn up your air conditioners, and turn on Faux News, and everything will be fine. Heh, heh." - Bush & Republicon Oil Cronies

13. Check out "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"
If anyone has any doubts, this will take care of them:

http://www.climatecrisis.net/aboutthefilm/

. . .From director Davis Guggenheim comes the Sundance Film Festival hit, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. That man is former Vice President Al Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election, re-set the course of his life to focus on a last-ditch, all-out effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change. In this eye-opening and poignant portrait of Gore and his "traveling global warming show," Gore also proves himself to be one of the most misunderstood characters in modern American public life. Here he is seen as never before in the media - funny, engaging, open and downright on fire about getting the surprisingly stirring truth about what he calls our "planetary emergency" out to ordinary citizens before it's too late.

With 2005, the worst storm season ever experienced in America just behind us, it seems we may be reaching a tipping point - and Gore pulls no punches in explaining the dire situation. Interspersed with the bracing facts and future predictions is the story of Gore's personal journey: from an idealistic college student who first saw a massive environmental crisis looming; to a young Senator facing a harrowing family tragedy that altered his perspective, to the man who almost became President but instead returned to the most important cause of his life - convinced that there is still time to make a difference.

15. This flys against one of the neoluddite talking points.
They claim that solar activity is the cause for the current warming trend. There is very good evidence for increases in solar irradiance with increases in sunspots and they claim because the sun is more active the earth is recieving more solar radiation. Here is the current solar cycle.

We are now near the bottom of the cycle, yet 2005 set the record for highest average global temperatures and 2006 is looking to be a record year also.

At 10:30 this morning it was only 94. The temperatures ranged from 91 to 94 according to the various banks along our route to the dog park.

17. heading for 102+ in NorCal
up in the hills...can't say what is predicted for the valleys, but willing to bet on eggs frying on sidewalks..seems to be warmer this summer, already...waiting with less than baited breath for August, ugh...

Advice to fellow inland Californians- stay in, stay cool, make sure your animals have shade and water.

Henrietta the Pet Chicken will spend her afternoon in her cage, in the nice, air conditioned house.

23. The forecast today for my part of Los Angeles was 110+. I am quite sure
it was at least that hot. When I walked (slowly) over to the market at 9:30 this evening it was still about 96. I am going to have to run the AC all night.

I typically have to run the AC all night only 3-4 nights all summer, and that in late Aug/early Sept. In JUNE this year I had to do it THREE NIGHTS!!!!! Hottest June I have ever seen here. And now it is completely unbearable (though July is frequently like this).

We only had 4 weeks of good growing season. It stayed cool and rainy through April (VERY weird) and I didn't get my tomatoes in until late April. Great for a month. Then the very first weekend of June it hit 110 all of a sudden and killed/crippled most of my garden.

my ac is only 4 years old and fairly energy efficient. however, i just got my bill (i'm all electric here) and it's 125 for last month! it's usually about 90 max in the summer. i'm in norcal and our summers often get above 100, but now it's also humid. very different!

25. LTTE in my local paper today
was headlined "Global Warming is a Hoax" or something similar.

He claimed that in the 70s hoaxers were talking about the next Ice Age and "global cooling" but since "that didn't pan out, they've switched to global warming."

I've never read such an irresponsible opinion. Of course when I read the name of the author I wasn't shocked, he's a local right wing blowhard (they really stand out here -- I'm in Santa Cruz).
