Bush points figure at Hezbollah, Syria
Israeli war planes continue their assault

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Saturday called on Hezbollah to lay down its arms and pointed his finger at Syria as Israeli war planes continued their assault on the militant group's strongholds in Lebanon.

Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, Bush faulted Hezbollah's rocket attacks at Israel and its capture of two Israeli soldiers on Wednesday for triggering the escalation of violence in recent days.

Putin said Hezbollah's tactics have been unacceptable, but called on a "balanced" use of force by both sides.

The leader of militant Islamic group Hezbollah declared "open war" with Israel on Friday after Israeli warplanes struck his home and office in Beirut.

The high-profile attack on Hassan Nasrallah's home and offices came as Israel pressed its incursion into Lebanon, mounting new strikes on the Beirut airport and other key infrastructure in a widening offensive that has killed more than 75 people in Lebanon and Israel.

1. I just got the most fucked up visual from this paragraph:
Putin said Hezbollah's tactics have been unacceptable, but called on a "balanced" use of force by both sides.

I am imagining this commercial for some brand of vodka, where groups of people are digitized into scenes of the chaos and destruction going on right now. The people are partying it up despite all the bombs, flames and mutilated bodies lying around. Cut to a scene of Putin, done up like that dude in the Tanqueray commercials, loud suit and all, who smiles and says, "Please destroy each other responsibly!" before raising his shot glass in a toast to the camera.

I think I have cynical and jaded down pat. :(

5. Israel pounds south Beirut, killing 18

Israel pounds south Beirut, killing 18

By SAM F. GHATTAS, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli warplanes pounded Hezbollah's south Beirut stronghold and struck roads around the country Saturday, killing at least 18 Lebanese fleeing the onslaught. Hezbollah rockets continued to pour into
Israel, where officials warned citizens that Tel Aviv could be hit.

The deadly barrages came as Israel charged that
Iran, the main sponsor of Hezbollah militants, has 100 troops in Lebanon providing Hezbollah key support — including helping fire a missile Friday that badly damaged an Israeli warship. Hezbollah denied it.

Neither side showed signs of backing down from the conflict, which erupted Wednesday when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. As civilian deaths mounted, diplomatic efforts to end the crisis had yet to get off the ground.

President Bush, on a trip to Russia, said it was up to Hezbollah "to lay down its arms and to stop attacking." Arab foreign ministers gathered in Cairo but fell into squabbling after moderate states, led by Saudi Arabia, denounced Hezbollah for starting the fight.........

6. 'Fleeing refugees, including women and children, were hit on a road'

.....Fleeing refugees, including women and children, were hit on a road adjacent to the Lebanese-Israeli border in an apparent Israeli airstrike as they left the village of Marwaheen, which abuts the border. Two cars were aflame, and bodies were blown into an adjacent ravine.

Police said 15 were killed in the afternoon attack. An Associated Press photographer counted 12 bodies in the vehicles.

"They're peaceful people who were displaced. They were just fleeing the shelling. They were hit on the road, in their cars," Abdel-Mohsen Hussein, the local mayor, told Al-Arabiya television.

At least three civilians were killed when another Israeli airstrike hit a bridge on the main highway linking Lebanon to Syria in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, security officials said.

8. Israel now attacking Sunni, Christian areas in Lebanon
19:04 IDF strikes Beirut lighthouse, 2 ports in Christian areas of capital (Reuters)

19:02 IDF strikes close to 40 targets in Lebanon`s Bekaa (Haaretz)

18:38 Sources: Israeli strikes target Beirut ports, north Lebanese town of Tripoli (Reuters)

Tripoli is a Sunni town.

If the attack is on Hezbollah, how do they justify targeting Christian and Sunni areas??

10. The Israelis justify their actions by the sword, not words.
They will attack anyone and anything they please, for whatever reason. Like the famous Beirut Lighthouse, a symbol of the city. Not quite a Hezbollah stronghold...

11. CNN is reporting that the Christian neighborhoods have been bombed
You think that killing Lebanese Christians would elicit a response from America. Like when we destroyed an entire city block in Baghdad in a futile attempt to get a Saddam, that was a Christian neighborhood.

13. The Lebanese military is now also under attack:
PORTS AND ARMY UNDER ATTACK

Update 4: A raid targets the army radar base in Wajh al-Hajar in the northern city of Batroun. Casualties reported.

Update 5: One Lebanese soldier died and three wounded. Okay, so now the Lebanese Army is being attacked. And also all the Lebanese ports. In Tripoli's port they hit wheat reserves. I'm sure Hizbullah fighters are not hiding there. What about Jounieh or Aamchit? They are touristic ports.
