Putin rejects Bush's Iraq democracy model
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/07/15/russia.g8/index.html

Saturday, July 15, 2006; Posted: 6:57 a.m. EDT (10:57 GMT)

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a suggestion from U.S. President George W. Bush that his country should emulate democracy in Iraq

"I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world, like Iraq where there's a free press and free religion, and I told him that a lot of people in our country would hope that Russia would do the same," Bush said.

To that, Putin replied, "We certainly would not want to have the same kind of democracy that they have in Iraq, quite honestly."

See, Georgie, that's what what's called diplomacy. Instead of saying that you are an Asshat for suggesting that ANY country should emulate the clusterfuck you created in Iraq, he politely declined your suggestion

8. Yeah, I have seen it in many pictures of the two,
you can clearly tell that Putin just despises Bush and understandable so. Bush's reference to Putin as Pooty-Poot a few years back was one of the most crass things I have ever seen a politician do. I don't know if he thought he was being cute or what but clearly Bush was showing what a complete dumb-ass he is.

Putin always looks to me like he'd give anything to have just 5 minutes alone with Georgie in a back alley.

9. Iraq's "free press"?????
I share your astonishment. I thought the Iraqi press was bought and paid for by the Defense Department, given all the "news stories" created by their public relations flacks masquerading as Iraqi journalists. I wonder how many DoD PR-types are still writing "news stories" for release in the US? I guess a not-free press is something we have in common with Iraq. Is a not-free press part of Bush's "spreading democracy" package?

To be fair, though, I have noted lately that some of the MSM are beginning to ask the tough questions with a certain tenacity. Keep it up !!

18. CNN's Ed Henry just made it look like Bush won this exchange
They just showed this exchange on CNN, presented by White House correspondent Ed Henry. I really, really hope Crooks & Liars taped it, because it was very revealing of the mindset of the American media.

What the excerpt above doesn't show is that Putin's quick jab drew a huge wave of laughter in the convention center. Both attendees and journalists covering the event were seen laughing out loud at Putin's clever retort.

Bush was left bumbling, embarrassed, and he replied to Putin: "Just wait, just wait." Bush, of course, was referring to the neocon fantasy of turning Iraq into a Republican model country. Right.

After showing the clip, CNN's Ed Henry immediately said: "Notice that he president said 'Just wait,' indicating to Putin that we are expecting a lot of progress in Iraq soon."

The way Ed Henry was trying to cover for Bush in this embarrassing exchange was petty and pathetic, but then another CNN anchor went even further.

A new CNN anchor called Tony Harris looked visibly upset, and replied to Ed Henry: "Nice. What a nice thing to say from our "friend" and ally. Very nice." He said it in a very angry tone, and emphasized the "friend" part with a hint of cynicism. You would expect this type of attitude from the clowns at Fox News' morning show "Fox and Friends," but certainly not from CNN, although nothing surprises me anymore.

So basically a world leader rips Bush a new one in front of the entire planet, which is embarrassing, while exposing the Bush charade of "democracy" in Iraq, and two CNN anchors trample over each other to make Bush look good, and complain about Putin allegiance.

That's all you need to know about CNN.

Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 07:48 AM by Julius Civitatus
Ed Henry tap-dances at the end of this broadcast making it sound as if Bush's lame "Just wait" comeback was actually the end of the debate, and the "tough jab" of this exchange. Embarrassing:

http://images1.americanprogress.org/il80web20037/ThinkProgress/2006/putinbush.320.240.mov

Unfortunately, the video stops short of the very embarrassing response by Tony Harris.

26. Bush backs away from spat with Putin (Reuters)

Bush backs away from spat with Putin

By Caren Bohan 1 hour, 41 minutes ago

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) -
President Bush backed away on Saturday from a public confrontation over Russia's democracy with President
Vladimir Putin, adhering to a pledge not to lecture the Kremlin leader.

At a joint news conference, the two made clear they discussed their differences privately on what critics say are declining civil liberties in Russia, and stepped gingerly around the issue in their public comments.

With Bush needing Russia's help on pressuring
Iran and
North Korea to forswear nuclear weapons, and with Middle East violence surging, democracy issues did not appear to play as dominating role in their talks as when they met in Slovakia last year.

Bush said it came up at their social dinner on Friday night.

"I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world like
Iraq, where there is a free press and free religion, and I told him that a lot of people in our country, you know, would hope that Russia would do the same thing," Bush said.

27. Bush interjected: "Just wait."

....."I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world like
Iraq, where there is a free press and free religion, and I told him that a lot of people in our country, you know, would hope that Russia would do the same thing," Bush said.

He quickly added: "I totally understand, however, that there will be a Russian-style democracy. I don't expect Russia to look like the United States. As Vladimir pointedly reminded me last night, 'We have a different history, different traditions."'

Putin pounced on the reference to Iraq. "We of course don't want to have a democracy like the one in Iraq, to be honest," he deadpanned, to laughter from Russian-speaking listeners.

Upon hearing the translation of Putin's remark, Bush interjected: "Just wait."

If Bush thinks Iraq is so great, why doesn't he visit more often, in the daylight, for more than a few hours, without sneaking in unannounced?! A real beacon of democracy, Iraq. Sounds like hell to me.

If he HAD to move, I bet everything Bush would choose Russia over Iraq.
