Trade Center family group angered over temporary PATH station

NEW YORK (AP) _ A group which represents the families of Sept. 11 terror attack victims has criticized Gov. George Pataki for allowing construction on the footprints of the twin towers.

The Coalition for 9/11 Families now wants Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton to sponsor a federal law to prevent any more construction in the space, The New York Post reported in Sunday editions.

The group, which regards the footprints as sacred, said the governor has broken a promise to protect the World Trade Center site.

The Port Authority is constructing four emergency exits for a temporary trade center PATH station set to open in November. One of the structures is placed where the North Tower had stood.

that they are never going to have the final say over what happens there. as far as i know the deed to the property has not been handed over to them.

i have great sympathy for their loss, but there is no way that some of the most expensive property on the planet is going to "just" be a memorial. and if there is a little spill over onto the "footprints" while the overall plans come together, so be it.

if they want to make the decisions, they should buy the property. maybe they should start doing some fund raising.

the longer the site sits empty, the longer osama can sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

as far as the rebuilding, as someone recently said, "let's roll".

3. Here's a take on "86" for you...

When I was in culinary school in D.C. I learned what was supposedly the real story behind "86". In restaurant parlance, waiters and chefs often communicate their orders by referring to the number of a particular table in the restaurant. There was a certain restaurant which had 85 tables. Anytime there was a mix up, or a misorder (as in no one could figure out where the order was supposed to go) they would say it was for table "86" (which obviously didn't exist), meaning that the order was to be discarded... and so the call became "86 that one!"

Did you know that story of origin 8643?

I had been familure with the term 86 for a good part of my life, most likely from old movies.

In my late 20s I landed a waiters position at a medium class rest. Engineer by day and waiter by night. The term 86 was used a great deal to indicate items no longer available, usually on a black board by the kitchen where the waiters could see in the process of their work.

like 86 the lobster, but your story re the origin of 86 is new to me. I wouldnt be surprised if that is how it started.

People who knew me were shocked I did so well there, friends were sure I would get pissed and dump water on guests.

It was hard work, with alot of good people amd lots of fun, best non technical income I have ever made. Every type of person worker there, people with masters degrees. I found a new understanding of that type of work and respect anyone that does it well.

7. Well, I hear you on about the "profession"...

I got my degrees in Nutritional Science and decided that, after all, I would like to become a gourmet chef. I gave it my best shot. I absolutely love to cook and had the discipline for it, and it was fun, but not exactly "professional" enough for me. I finally gave it up and pursued a career in the medical field instead. At least there is a degree of professionalism there... for the most part.

Anyway, I thought the 86 story was interesting, and it certainly made sense.

I think we have hijacked khephras thread a little. I choose the ID 8643 as a statement, it turned out to be not so good as an ID cause people dont remember it so well, maybe thats me, I dont know.

I was hoping the message would be clear GET RID OF BUSH!

and the fact that 86 and 43 were both agents on Get Smart!

and for some reason I liked the fact that 43 was Half of 86, it seemed to fit!

I would love to do something like that. Until this past January I/we lived in Arlington VA for over 25 years, in fact the rest I worked at was at Tysons Corner. I am now just starting to understand how many DUers are in the DC Metro area! Damn, I wish I could meet some of you folks.

10. Nope, don't live there...

As a matter of fact, I just traveled up there to go to the school. I think it doesn't even exist amymore... that was a number of years ago. I now live in a peaceful, pastorale setting in Southwest Arkansas and really don't miss D.C. much at all. It was neat to be there for the time though. As they say, "nice place to visit, but..." You know the rest of the line.

15. To be fair - the damage to the WTC site cut thru many important "hubs"

one of which was the extensive network of railroad and subway lines not to mention the communication and utility lines.

Sort of like taking a shotgun to someone's spine.

Returning all of this to proper working order is a life and death matter to a lot of New Yorkers.

It cannot be left to remain a complete "void". Nor should it.

Also, this is a temporary solution to get things up and running as quickly as possible - it has been almost a couple years already.

There has been a lot of community imput for the rebuilding of the site, and compromises have been made. Not everyone will be absolutely happy with the decisions, but an extremely good faith effort with good results have ensued.

To do otherwise would be a victory for the evil people who did this.
