Ahmadinejad: Islamic World Will Destroy Israel
http://www.iranian.ws/iran_news/publish/article_16682.shtml
Jul 14, 2006

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasted that Israel is not powerful enough to take on Iran after warning the Jewish state not to attack regional ally Syria.

"Thanks be to God, despite its criminal and savage nature, the Zionist regime and its supporters in the West do not have the power to look in the same way towards Iran," the ultra-conservative president said in a speech in the provinces.

He was speaking as Israel continued its offensive in Lebanon sparked by the capture Wednesday by Iran- and Syria-backed Hezbollah militiamen of two Israeli soldiers and the killing of eight others.

11. I'm sure the Hezbollah rockets weren't aimed at children
I'm sure that Hezbollah took extreme precautions to make sure the rockets they lobbed into Israel didn't hit any Jewish houses with children in them.

Why is practically everyone condemning Israel's actions, but not saying a damned word about the constant attacks from groups like Hamas and Hezbollah? How many innocent civilians have been killed over the past few decades from Palestinian suicide bombers in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, etc?

Both sides need to calm down. But it doesn't help that practically every single time there is a cease-fire, some Palestinian decides that's a perfect time to conduct a suicide attack.

12. The headline does not reflect the quotations, as usual.
"Thanks be to God, despite its criminal and savage nature, the Zionist regime and its supporters in the West do not have the power to look in the same way towards Iran," the ultra-conservative president said in a speech in the provinces.

He is claiming that Iran can protect itself.

"Attacks by the Zionist regime against its neighbors, notably Lebanon, Syria, and its threats against other countries in the region are due to the fact that this puppet regime cannot live normally," IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

No threat there, just his opinion of Israel's current government policy. It could also be interpreted as some existential point about the long run contradictions inherent in a "Jewish state", as opposed to the Jewish religion. I would say that an Islamic state is just as contradictory.

"This situation cannot last, and one day the protectors of the Zionist regime -- the US in particular -- will have to explain themselves and be judged by the conscience of humanity," he added.

"This situation cannot last" is not the same as saying Israel will be destroyed by Iran, or that Israel's destruction is Iranian policy.

If Israel commits another act of idiocy and aggresses Syria, this will be the same as an aggression against the entire Islamic world and it will receive a stinging response," he said in a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.

He is saying that another attack could (would) drag in the whole Islamic world (and possibly the rest of the world as well). That seems like a reasonable prediction of the future.

Once more the headline is not actually supported by the story.

13. Odd: nowhere in the linked article can I find the quote from the headline
He pretty clearly threatens Israel, but this headline quote appears nowhere in the linked article. What the fuck is up with that?

15. Looks like the pro-Iran war propagandists are at it again!
They got us all confused and frightened to get us to send our sons and daughters to die in Iraq to eliminate one of Israel's enemies, and now they are following the same script with Iran. As long as it is American blood that is being spilled, why should the Israel Lobby care?
