Assad pledges Syrian help for Lebanon

1 hour, 32 minutes ago

DAMASCUS (Reuters) -
Syria will put its resources at the disposal of Lebanon to help cope with Israeli attacks devastating the country, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Lebanese President Emile Lahoud by phone on Saturday.

The official news agency SANA said Assad expressed solidarity with Lebanon, where Israeli bombing has killed around 100 civilians since Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border operation on Wednesday.

It was the first comment by Assad since the confrontation began between
Israel and Hizbollah, which is backed by Syria and
Iran.

SANA did not say whether Assad discussed Hizbollah during the telephone call with Lahoud and gave no details on what kind of help he was offering.

2. With Syria in the war now, God help us all
Syria and Iran have a mutual defense pact, so certianly we can expect Iran to enter the war once Israel starts bombing Syria. and that is when Mr. shit meets Mr. fan.

3. If Iran enters
it will get real nasty, but I don't think it would be Israel that would be driven into the sea.

4. What Syria said was ambiguous.
I do not expect Syrian tanks and munitions to be sent, nor would I be surprised if they were sent.

"Help in coping" could merely be saying they'll provide emergency generators, blankets, food, and funds to help with rebuilding. Or it could mean providing materiel sufficient to attempt to shoot down Israeli planes. Or they could try to invade so as to level Tel Aviv.

Ambiguous.

5. Syria is speaking of humanitarian help and moral support
In an emotional appeal on Lebanese television, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora called for an immediate ceasefire and urged the US to intervene.

"Lebanon is a disaster zone... and (it) pleads to its friends in the world to rush to its aid," he said.

Meanwhile Bush, like Pontius Pilate, washes his hands and lets the Lebanese be slaughtered by an Israeli overreaction that will bring down the Siniora government.

7. Assad is responding to Lebanese PM Siniora's plea for help
Siniora called for an immediate cease-fire and international help to stop attacks from Israel's "war machine," according to CNN's translation.

Such a ceasefire, he said, will allow Lebanon to "establish its sovereignty over all its lands" based on the 1949 armistice agreement.

"We are pained as well as angry, yet determined and patient," Siniora said, adding that "these are hours for unity, not for division."

He said Israel was "punishing all Lebanese collectively, with their actions lacking any moral or legal legitimacy."

Lahoud stresses unity against Israel's aggressions
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 7/14/2006

Over the past 24 hours, Israeli air and ground forces bombarded various locations in Lebanon, including Beirut International Airport, as well as several bridges and power stations. About 60 Lebanese were killed and more than 70 wounded in the attacks

Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri said that the Israeli enemy has kept on attacking civilian areas.

Berri had said 47 civilians have so far been martyred and more than 130 injured.

He added that Israel has targeted civilian regions and the infrastructure of Lebanon including bridges and hotels.

He pointed out the resistance of the Lebanese people against the atrocities of the Israeli regime, stressing unity among the nation of Lebanon.

American-Arab calls for halt to Israeli military rampage

Lebanon-Israel-USA, Politics, 7/14/2006

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) expressed extreme concern over the increasing destruction, suffering, deaths, and injuries in both Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip.

ADC urgently called, in a press release, on the international community and the US Administration to intervene to stop the escalating political and humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and Palestine, and to stop the Israeli government from its inhumane use of disproportionate military force.

It said Israel's military offensive in Lebanon comes while Israel continues a separate siege in the Gaza Strip. Three weeks of Israeli air strikes and attacks have killed more than 60 Palestinians and plunged Gaza's 1.4 million residents into further deplorable living conditions, and stripped them of access to electricity and water. Just yesterday, 24 Palestinians were killed, including a family of nine.

ADC noted that Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states, "No protected person may be punished for an offense he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited. Pillage is prohibited. Reprisals against protected persons and their property are prohibited." Under the 1949 Geneva Conventions collective punishments are a war crime.
